From the Principal From the Principal

Dear Grand Avenue Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already moving into February! While the winter weather continues, we have plenty of exciting things happening within our school walls to keep our students engaged and learning.

Above the Line: Character Trait of the Month This month, our school-wide focus for "Above the Line" behavior is Honesty and Trustworthiness. We will be talking with students about the importance of being truthful and building trust with their peers and teachers. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home and celebrate moments when your child demonstrates these vital traits.

Attendance Matters Consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in a student's academic success. Each month, we set a school-wide goal of 94.5% attendance. In January, our attendance rate was 92.4%. We are so close to our goal! Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring your children are at school and ready to learn every day.

Art Spirit Days: February 23–27 Get ready to show your creativity! We are thrilled to announce that we will be celebrating Art Spirit Days from February 23rd through the 27th. This week aligns with our Youth Art Month celebrations. You can expect more detailed information regarding the specific themes for each day to be sent home later this month. For now, please mark your calendars for this fun week!

National School Counseling Week - February 2-6

This month’s focus is Honesty. One way to think about Honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing Honesty helps strengthen our relationships and even reduces stress. Honesty is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well, along with Gratitude and Creativity. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.

During classroom guidance lessons, 3rd graders will be reviewing the importance of being honest when we are feeling unsafe or experiencing unpleasant emotions. Fourth graders will be discussing safe and healthy choices surrounding substances, including tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, and will have a guest presenter, Officer Nick (our Sauk Prairie School Resource Officer). Fifth graders will be exploring the topic of mental health, and their ability to honestly assess their own well-being.

Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing Honesty. Here are 2 “PurposeFull Pursuits” you can complete together!

  1. Review Honesty as a family! Honesty is being truthful in what you say and do. Discuss the importance of being Honest and work together to create a family Honesty pledge. Create and decorate a sign together that explains what Honesty means in your family. Have each family member sign the pledge and choose a spot to display it. Refer back to the pledge as a reminder to be Honest and to celebrate when Honesty is practiced!

  2. Set aside some time to gather as a family and check in with each other. Ask each family member, “How are you feeling today?” Practice Honesty when responding and listen carefully as each family member shares. Use the emotion check-in questions to learn more. Challenge yourselves to check in with each other on a regular basis! Emotion Check-In Questions: ● Tell me more about that feeling. ● Why do you think you are feeling that emotion? ● What do you need right now?

What’s the only book award where students choose the nominees and vote for their favorite? Wisconsin’s Golden Archer award does just that. So which book will get your child’s vote?

  1. The Three Billy Goats Gruff

  2. Knight Owl and Early Bird

  3. Gib-ber-ish

  4. Vlad, the Fabulous Vampire

  5. There’s a Ghost in this House

These five books are nominees for the Golden Archer Award. This award is Wisconsin's Student Choice Award, where the books are nominated by students and voted on by students only from Wisconsin. Ask your child(ren) if you have more questions. The winner of the Golden Archer is usually shared in March.

I am sure that many of you have now heard in the news that we have had 2 confirmed cases of measles here in Wisconsin, most recently identified in Madison. The most effective way of protecting you and your family against this illness is to make sure you are up to date on your vaccines.

According to the CDC, measles is a highly contagious communicable disease spread through droplets in the air. Symptoms can start with a fever and cough and a few days after contact a rash can begin, typically starting on the face and behind the ears.

If your children are not up to date with the MMR or the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine, please contact your doctor to see about getting this scheduled. You can also contact your local health department. Most child vaccines can be administered free of charge and adult vaccines can be administered with a small fee.

If you are unsure of you or your child's vaccination status, you can look up vaccination records on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry(WIR). If you feel that you have had the vaccine, but can't find the record, you can contact your doctor to schedule a lab appointment to discuss getting an MMR titer drawn. This will let you know if you have immunity or not and if you need to get a booster of the vaccine.

Attendance Information Attendance Information

If your child is ill, going to an appointment, or will be late to school, please call the attendance line before 8:15 am (608-643-1991). This phone line is available 24 hours a day. If you e-mail or call the teacher, you still need to contact the office. It is essential that the school is aware of your child's absence. If a child misses more than an hour in the morning or afternoon, they will be marked absent for half a day. Students leaving early will be marked with a Q code, which is similar to a tardy.

If you call your child in with an illness, we would like you to, please let us know the symptoms, i.e., a fever, sore throat, headache, cough, etc., that your child may have.

In addition, if your child usually rides the bus, please call Lamers to let them know if your child will not be riding the bus. They can be contacted at 608-460-7050.

Use the link below to access the form or pick up a form at the SPSD District Office (440 13th Street, Prairie du Sac, WI). Temporary Dismissal Changes

To ensure the safety of students and allow for adjustments in bus routes, a parent/guardian must complete this form prior to their child riding a bus route that is different from the child's regular dismissal plan documented in Skyward.

The district strongly encourages all requests to be submitted prior to 11:00 AM on the day the change is needed. This form applies to all students in all grades (4K - Grade 12).

When dropping off or picking up students, please be sure to use the Grand Avenue main entrance doors that face Grand Avenue. Please do not use the parking lot as this is for busses and staff only. In addition, to improve the traffic flow, please pull up toward Marion Park instead of stopping directly in front of the main entrance. This will help prevent traffic issues at the stop signs. You can also drop your child off near the crossing guards who can assist with crossing the street. Additionally, please have your child exit the vehicle closest to the sidewalk rather than onto the street.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep everyone safe.
