Literacy Support at Home

🎉 Happy New Year, Families!
A new year is a wonderful time to build strong reading habits and confidence at home. Even a few minutes of reading each day makes a big difference!

⭐ At-Home Reading Tips

  • Read together 10–15 minutes a day

  • Reread favorite books to build confidence and fluency

  • Talk about the story: Who? What happened? What comes next?

  • Help your child sound out tricky words slowly

  • Celebrate effort — trying hard is how readers grow!

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” — Margaret Fuller

🐝 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Classroom spelling bees will be held next week (January 12th-January 16th). Students will be sent home with a list of spelling words and are responsible for practicing at home.

🏠 How Families Can Help at Home

  • Practice 5–10 minutes a day

  • Say the word, spell it out loud, then write it

  • Clap syllables or tap sounds in the word

  • Use the word in a sentence

  • Keep it fun and encouraging!

The top three students from each grade will advance to the school-wide spelling bee, which will take place on January 23.

From there, the top two students from each grade band
(Grades 1–3 and Grades 4–5) will advance to the district-wide spelling bee, tentatively scheduled for February 3.

📌 More information to follow.

✨ Martin Luther King Jr. Day — January 19

On January 19, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who taught us the importance of kindness, fairness, and standing up for what is right.

We encourage families to talk with children about ways they can show kindness and help others in their everyday lives.

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
