Week 28: Blue Jays Are Building Greatness — Through Hard Work!

Greetings, Sylvan Blue Jay Families!

On Saturday, our students that participated in our Color Run to support our 5th Grade Field Trip had a great time. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this fun event. We look forward to having The Color Run become an annual event!

As we move into Week 28 of the school year, we continue to see our students growing in so many ways—academically, socially, and emotionally. Our teachers and staff remain committed to creating classrooms where every Blue Jay feels supported, challenged, and encouraged to do their very best each day.

This week many people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and talk about luck, but in school we know that success is not about luck—it comes from effort, perseverance, and teamwork. Our students are learning that when they work hard, ask questions, practice their skills, and stay focused, they can accomplish great things.

You play an important role in this process. Simple things like encouraging your child to read at home, talking with them about their school day, celebrating their effort, and reinforcing the importance of kindness and responsibility all help strengthen their success at school.

Together, we are continuing the work of Building Greatness at Sylvan Elementary. Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and encouragement of our students as they learn and grow.

We are proud of our Blue Jays and grateful for the families who support them every day. 💙💛

With appreciation,
Mrs. Hamilton

March: Courage

What is Courage?

Courage is the ability and strength to face something that may be difficult or challenging. Courage is not the absence of fear but rather perseverance in the presence of fear and the willingness to stand up for what is right or try something new, even though it may be uncomfortable or uncertain.

Why focus on Courage?

  • Courage encourages engagement. Courage helps students raise their hands, participate, try new things, and voice their opinions.
  • Courage builds self-confidence. Courage is the choice to act. By doing something, students increase their belief in themselves and their ability to do difficult or challenging things.
  • Courage can help reframe a negative. When something does not go as planned, or a student gets upset about a mistake or failure, courage can help reframe the event in a positive light.

Courage in Action:

  • Provide leadership opportunities. Students can learn and demonstrate leadership by teaching and mentoring others, classroom roles and responsibilities, or community outreach.
  • Encourage discussion and debate. Foster curiosity and empower students to formulate ideas and engage in respectful discourse and conversations.
  • Celebrate failures. Create opportunities to reduce fear of failure and celebrate when students try something new, even if they are not successful the first time.

  • School ends at 2:35 p.m.
  • If you are signing your students out early (before 2:00 p.m.), you must go inside the front office and check them out. If you arrive early, but after 2:00 p.m., to sign your child out, you must wait until the dismissal announcements are made at 2:00 p.m. We appreciate your cooperation with this matter!
  • If you need to change your child's afternoon transportation, please complete the Google Form linked here by 1:00 pm. Teachers cannot check and respond to messages and emails throughout the day when they are teaching. Please do not expect an immediate response from your child's teacher during instructional hours. Office hours for teachers begin after 3:00 p.m.
  • Families may come to eat lunch with your students. Please reach out to your child's teacher 24 hours in advance to let them know you are coming so they can plan for seating. Remember: NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINK MAY BE BROUGHT IN (in advertised packaging). Upon arrival, please sign in at the front office and get a visitor's tag.
  • During the afternoon dismissal, all parents/guardians picking up in the car rider line, must have their student's assigned yellow number card visible on the dash or in the window. If you do not have a car rider tag, you will need to park in the overflow lot across the street and come in with your ID to get your student. This is a safety precaution to ensure that ALL students are going home with someone who has permission to pick them up. No passing is allowed in the car rider line. The safety of our Blue Jays is a priority.
  • Please note: Traffic turning left into the car rider line cannot block the oncoming traffic on Sylvan Rd. per the Highway Patrol. Please utilize the overflow parking circle to turn around so that you can turn right into the car rider line drop-off.
