News and Notes News and Notes

  • Book Fair- Next week is the book fair! We are excited to see all the Grandparents visiting the fair with their students. If your child does not have a grandparent attending, they are welcome to still shop during their grandparent event, or the fair will also be open to the BES public on Thursday, September 12 from 4:00-6:30. Remember that you can also set up an Ewallet this weekend for your child to spend money in the form of a “gift card” at the fair. Your support of this annual event has let us buy new books for the library, and provide all of our students a free book at both Christmastime and before summer break. Wow…thank you! https://www.scholastic.com/bf/berrytonelementaryschool1.

  • Picture Day: Looking for 3-4 parent volunteers for Friday's picture day! If you're interested, please email Tanya at howbertt@usd450.net

BES Art Corner BES Art Corner

This week in art class the students in Kindergarten wrapped up their line and dot art! They turned out precious! I introduced the artist, Piet Mondrian to first grade! Mondrian was a Dutch painter who was considered one of the greatest artist of the 20th century! He was famous for his abstract paintings using primary colors! The 1st grade students loved learning how use a ruler to create straight lines! 2nd grade loved creating positive and negative space on their artwork this week! We used artist tape to create designs and they learned how to use oil pastels for the first time too! 3rd and 4th grade worked hard on creating art like the artist Carolyn Gavin! Gavin is known for her extremely large watercolor flowers! The students loved using markers and water to mimic her style! 5th and 6th grade started drawing crystals that show how light refracts through glass to create a rainbow. Their art reflects what occurs with this process! We had a blast this week and I love teaching art to your children!

4th Grade Fun 4th Grade Fun

4th grade has been conducting soil investigations. We applied our understanding of soil is and what it can be made of, to create our own. The pudding represented silt/clay, M&Ms represented pebbles, the black Oreos were crushed up a little bit and represented gravel, crushed up white Oreos represented sand, and gummy worms represented the humus. Students made their soil, drew a picture of it and described the various layers in the soil in their journals using the scientific terms we had learned about. It was so much fun!
