Decatur community,

86. It's not a year, though some of you reading this may have been born then. It's not an address. It's not the population of a small town in northern Alaska, though it is the population of one Kansas town (Gaylord). 86 students earned Honor Roll recognition during the first semester of the school year. We consistently promote all of the things that we are doing as a school when it comes to course offerings, sports, activities, all of the things that make a school stand out from others, but, let us never forget that the most fundamental function of any school is academics and preparing our students for the future. Congratulations to the 86 students that have made the First Semester Honor Roll list.

SHOUTOUTS SHOUTOUTS

Shoutout to high school basketball teams for both going 2-1 in the NWKL Tournament this past week. Each team lost tough first round matches, but they finished the tournament strong with big wins over tough opponents.

The girls were down big in the first round game against Tribune, and they almost came back and stole it. Their last 6 quarters of basketball were stellar, and they should take some confidence into this week's matchups.

The boys were down 10-0 in their last matchup and came back to win by 7. Coach Breth never stopped communicating, and the boys were as composed in a tough situation as I have ever seen them. It is never fun to be down 10-0, but the resilience that was shown by the team during the experience isn't something you can coach, and it was a great learning experience for the boys.

Shoutout to each and every worker that worked the tournament this past week. Whether it be taking tickets, working the concession stand, running a clock, keeping book, maintenance, or any other number of items, it was only through the "It takes a village" philosophy that we were able to get it done.

The building doesn't exactly rest this week, as we host two more basketball games on Tuesday and Friday, and we host our JH home wrestling tournament on Thursday.

Shoutout to Jenny Tally for once again taking care of the hospitality room for the tournament. Walking tacos, meatballs, banana bread cake, and a whole lot more were on the menu. Tons of compliments from our guests were showered, and each day left nothing left at the end.

I should probably send another shoutout to her for her vanilla rhubarb jelly. There was a jar waiting on my desk a few months ago. Why? Just 'cause. Thanks for being special!

Shoutout to band director Brad Persinger and his students that attended the K-State band clinic in Manhattan this past weekend. This clinic starts on late Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday evening. It's a fun experience for all involved, and they have multiple opportunities to both learn and play throughout the weekend.

Shoutout to all of the local community members that have recently agreed to be on our CTE Pathway Advisory Councils. I mentioned last week that we were looking to add more Pathways through our course offerings. Thanks to all of those listed below that will kick off our councils, and we hope to add more.

2024-2025 First Semester High School Honor Roll

To make the Decatur Community Honor Roll, you must make a minimum of a 3.0 average (B average), and you cannot have any D or F on your transcript for that semester. There are three recognitions:

3.0-3-49- Red Devil Honor Roll

3.5-3.99- Principal’s Honor Roll

4.0- USD 294 Board's Honor Roll

Almost 60% of our students made the Honor Roll this semester. It speaks volumes about not only many things involving the school, but also to the high standards, values, and expectations that students and families in this community have placed on education and their children’s lives.

Students will be receiving a certificate over the course of the next few weeks. I look forward to seeing some shared pictures of certificates on a fridge for families to see.

7th Grader Gemma Louderback Wins the DCHS School Spelling Bee

After 28 rounds of spelling words, 7th grade student Gemma Louderback became the 2025 DCHS Spelling Bee champion. Louderback is the defending Decatur County Spelling Bee Champion and will look to repeat this Wedensday, January 29th at 2:30 in the DCHS library.

Here's how it went at the end.

2nd: (7th) Graham Spivey - went out on the word defibrillator in round 27 (only had 1 l in his spelling)

1st: (7th) Gemma Louderback - Spelled impeccable in round 27, then spelled the word séance as the championship word.

Congratulations to both Gemma and runner-up Graham Spivey who will also compete. The top 2 spellers from each school compete each year for the County title and an opportunity to go to State. 8th grade is the final year that students are eligible to compete in spelling bees.

Since spelling has been big this week, how about this word?

Deja vu: a feeling of having already experienced the present situation.

The paragraph below was literally word for word what I wrote last year, and I will end this message with it again.

As I am hustling through this message to get ready for the game, I am amazed at how consistent it has been that every year I write about the Honor Roll, the Chiefs are in a playoff game that is either underway or about to start as I am typing. This goes back many years before I came to Oberlin. I'm a Broncos fan, so it's been a long time since I have had much to cheer about in January when it comes to football, but I would still be happy for all of those out there that I care about if the Chiefs get a win.

Until next week!

Jeremy Holloway
