A Message from Ms. ML A Message from Ms. ML

zoom_out_map

This week I held an informal post-high school information session with our juniors during Wednesday’s Academy. I walked them through a few important slides (here is the slidedeck) that highlight the different things they can do to work towards their post-high school plans. My goal was to show them how to login to Naviance and sign up for at least one if not more (up to 5) college visits held in Room 20 at the College and Career Center (my other office/job). Now that students know how, I hope to see more MHS students at these college rep visits. And while I’m on the topic, please read this week’s College and Career Newsletter as I highlight the reasons why these college visits are so helpful for students to attend. I put a lot of information in this newsletter and really hope that students are reading it.

On Friday 9th and 12th grade students attended the Consent Assembly. If your student has a desire to check-in with me, Ms. Carlson or a Wellness Center intern, please contact us.

Resources for all students

Academy- Each student has an academy teacher. Its noted in their schedule. But, they can use Flexisched to request to see other teachers during the Wednesday and Friday academy time.

Peer Tutoring- During Academy time, students have the choice to be with a peer tutor vs going to see a their teachers. Students select “Peer Tutoring” for Academy and are then paired, under the guidance of a teacher, with a peer who can help them in a specific subject area.

Falcon Hour- Recently started, students have a space where they can stay after school to finish work! For 1 hour right after school, students can go to room 47A on Mondays and Tuesdays. There even might be some snacks available!!!

Reminder about Work Permits:

If you are starting a job and under 18 years old, Ms Manalo LeClair has the work permit applications for students. Students, parents/ guardians and employers to fill out and sign. Once this form is signed, please bring this to Ms ML and she will need at least 24 hours to type up the actual work permit which goes back to the employer.

For counselors, we need you to have your college application list in Naviance under "Colleges I am thinking About" and do the senior brag survey. Your counselors and teachers need at least 4 weeks notice before your college application deadlines to prepare.

Attendance Policy Review Attendance Policy Review

zoom_out_map

Regular attendance and classroom participation are essential to the educational process at MHS. Missing class presentations, discussions, lectures, demonstrations and laboratories can be detrimental to student achievement, grades, credit accumulation and the progress of the class itself.

Reporting and Excusing an Absence

When a student is absent, it is required that the parent/guardian either phone the Attendance Office recorder (510-594-2889) or send a note explaining the reason for the absence. If an absence is cleared by phone, it is not necessary to follow up with a note. Only the signatures of the parent(s)/guardian(s) on the student emergency card are permitted on notes. Please provide the following information: first and last name of the student, name of parent, date of absence, the specific classes missed, and the reason for the absence. Parents/Guardians must excuse their student’s absence within three days of the time they return. If an absence is not cleared within that time, the absence will be marked as unexcused. Students are not permitted to excuse themselves on the recorder or by note. Students who miss three or more days of school in succession must present a doctor’s note, if the absences are due to illness.

With great community enthusiasm, the Piedmont Education Foundation (PEF) kicked off its annual Giving Campaign on September 24. Families and supporters showed their spirit by wearing purple, while Mulberry’s Market generously donated popsicles for the celebration.

PEF’s Giving Campaign plays a vital role in supporting Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD), contributing 8% to the district's budget. Every contribution helps maintain quality programs and plan for the future. This year’s goal is 100% participation and raising over $3.5 million, with all 27 PEF Board members already pledging their support.
