Student Release During School Day
In an effort to alleviate disruptions to classroom learning, if you need to pick up your child during the school day, please do your best to utilize a passing period. We understand that this may not always be possible, but when it is, it really benefits our learning environment. Per the student handbook, middle school students must be signed out from the front office by a guardian. Please also call ahead or email. High school students can sign out from the office on their own with prior guardian approval (email cbssattendance@gunnisonschools.net or call 970-641-7720). Thanks for your help and support!
Cell Phone Policy
At the end of the 25-26 school year, the GWSD Board of Education voted to update our district’s personal device policy. The personal device expectations that have previously applied to students in grades K-8 will be expanded to include students in grades 9-12. During the instructional day, students will follow a “No See, No Hear” expectation, which means that personal devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and earbuds, must be silenced and stored out of sight, rather than kept in pockets or on their person.
This approach is designed to support what we value most: focused learning, meaningful engagement with teachers and classmates, and a healthy relationship with technology. By reducing the distractions that personal devices can create during the school day, we can help students build sustained attention, strengthen face-to-face connections, and make the most of their learning time. Students will continue to use their district-issued Chromebooks for schoolwork, and accommodations and emergency procedures remain in place. As we integrate this new policy with our existing practices, students may be asked to ‘park’ their phones in a designated area at the beginning of each class, as they have done in recent years. This helps us to create a consistent, distraction-free learning environment where students can give their full attention to instruction, discussion, and one another.
We encourage families to review the full Personal Device Policy, along with the Student Device Consequences and Procedures that outline how violations will be addressed.
We appreciate the partnership of our students and families as we work together to create learning environments where students can be present, connected, and ready to learn.
