From The Principal
Dear East Middle School Families,
What a wonderful first week of school! We are so proud of our students and the way they have handled all of the excitement—and challenges—that come with starting a new school year. We may not have dived too deeply into academics just yet, but there were certainly plenty of important life lessons happening throughout our building!
Our students learned how to persevere when those tricky lockers refused to cooperate, navigate multiple lunch lines, find a place to sit in a busy cafeteria, and make their way to class with more than 800 other students moving through the hallways! Most importantly, we watched students ask for help when they needed it and step up to help classmates who needed a hand. Those are life skills that extend far beyond middle school, and we couldn't be prouder of the kindness, patience, and resilience our students demonstrated this week.
As we move into next week, we will begin learning more about where each student is academically in reading and math through our NWEA assessments. Students take NWEA three times throughout the school year so we can monitor their progress and growth. We use this information, along with classroom performance and teacher observations, to make sure students are receiving the right level of instruction. For some students, that may mean additional support; for others, it may mean opportunities for enrichment. For many, it simply confirms they are right where they need to be.
Our students are familiar with NWEA, as they have been taking it for the past several years. Testing will take place during their regular ELA and math classes, and we work hard to make these feel like normal school days. Our message to students is simple: take your time and do your best. NWEA is an adaptive assessment, which means the questions change based on a student's responses. When a student answers correctly, the questions become more challenging; when they answer incorrectly, the difficulty adjusts. Students are not expected to know every answer—that's actually the point! The assessment helps us determine what they already know and what they are ready to learn next. It is important, however, that students give their best effort so their results accurately reflect their abilities and they do not need to retake the assessment.
The best part comes after testing when we put the data into the hands of our students. During WIN Time, students will review their scores, reflect on their strengths and areas for growth, and set individual goals for the year. Their ELA and math teachers will then help them identify specific skills and strategies they can work on to reach those goals. We want our students to understand that this is their learning and their growth. When students understand their own data and have a voice in setting their goals, they begin to take greater ownership of their learning. In the coming weeks, students will bring their testing information and goals home so they can share their progress with you as well.
With such a great first week behind us, we know this is going to be an incredible year at East! Thank you for trusting us with your children and for being our partners in their education. As always, if you have questions, concerns, or simply need some help navigating middle school right alongside your child, please reach out. We are here to help!
Here's to a fantastic year at EMS!

LATE ARRIVAL/EARLY DISMISSAL: If your student has an appointment during the school day and will be arriving late, please be sure to either call and report this or sign them in upon arrival. They may also bring a doctor's note for a medical excuse. If your student needs to leave early, you will come into the office and sign them out (ID required). Parents may contact the office to have their student called down & ready to leave school for an appointment. To minimize the amount of instructional time missed, we encourage you to call with an accurate pick-up time. Parents will still need to enter the office & sign the student out to verify ID.
***Anyone who is not a parent/guardian and is picking up a student from school MUST be listed as an emergency contact. You can add these people using ParentVue.
ITEMS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL: If your child has forgotten something for school and calls you to bring it to school, the item will be dropped with the security staff in the Main Entrance vestibule. The student will be called during the last 10 minutes of a class to collect the item. The exception to this process will be during the lunch periods (4th-hour class session). During the lunch periods, the student will be called out of class to pick up the item. The best time to drop off needed items during the school day is from 8:30 am - 11:15 am or 1:15 pm - 2:45 pm.
NO OUTSIDE FOOD DELIVERIES ALLOWED: Food deliveries are not allowed during school hours. All students are eligible for FREE breakfast and lunch, so there is no need for food to be delivered to them. Students are always welcome to bring their own packed lunches as an alternative. This includes drinks - water is the only drink allowed in the classrooms.
SPECIAL DAYS:
While we understand that special days like birthdays are cause for celebration, the following items are not allowed due to safety/allergy precautions:
- Flowers/Candy bouquets
- Glass containers
- Balloons of any type
- Nuts in the classroom
Class birthday parties are not allowed, per district policy. The best plan would be to celebrate your student's special day with them at home after school.
We thank you for your understanding and appreciate your cooperation!
CARE CENTER: This is an area in the office where students can go when injured or ill. A secretary will tend to the student by either caring for him/her or calling an emergency contact to pick the child up. Any student that is found to have a fever over 100.4° must be picked up to go home.
****IF YOUR STUDENT HAS A FEVER, DIARRHEA OR IS VOMITING, THEY ARE NOT PERMITTED TO RETURN TO SCHOOL UNTIL SYMPTOM-FREE FOR 24 HOURS.
