Principal's Mid-Month Memo
April 12, 2026
There’s nothing quite like April at SHS. It’s that bittersweet time of year where we enjoy the beautiful weather while preparing to say "see you later" to our graduating seniors. As they prepare for their next chapters—and as the rest of us try to remember how to sit in a classroom when it’s 70 degrees outside—let’s make sure we stay focused on our current goals.
We are coming off a very productive start to the month, including a successful PSAT/SAT administration (huge props to everyone for surviving the silence) and the well-deserved recognition of our winter athletes for their hard work and accomplishments. It is truly inspiring to see our students excelling both in the classroom and on the field, even as "Senioritis" begins its annual, highly contagious spread.
Graduation will be here before we know it—let’s keep the momentum going (and maybe some of that caffeine, too)! Please note the important dates and deadlines at the bottom of the memo!
Warmly,
~Ms. Ward

🌟 Student Spotlight
Congratulations to Maddy Crapulli for an outstanding achievement! Maddy earned 1st place in Rhode Island and 2nd place nationally 🏆 for her essay on the Stock Market Game. Entered by her teacher, Mr. Waterman, her work received national recognition and earned her a variety of well-deserved prizes. This accomplishment highlights both her hard work and the strength of the academic programs at Smithfield High School. See the SIFMA press release linked here.
Science Olympiad
The Science Olympiad team competed in the state competition on Saturday at RIC. They competed against twenty other high school teams and came out with a team finish of 7th! All members of the team showed up and competed hard in order for this to happen. In addition to this amazing finish, there were several students who medaled in their respective competitions:
Marvin Laguerre and Uchenna Ezeama won bronze for chemistry lab.
Elenice Pupo, Mary McCauley and Zoey Howel won silver for Codebusters.
Logan Boucher and Kiarra Laguerre won bronze for Forensics and
Levi Foster won silver for Robot Tour.
This group worked hard all year and proved, once again, how great they can be!
