Madison named a national "Best Community for Music Education"!! Madison named a national "Best Community for Music Education"!!

This is the thirteenth year Madison has received this distinction! Out of 14,000 eligible districts, Madison joins 975 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2024. The complete list of districts can be found here:

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs. This couldn't be more true of the program we have in Madison.

On behalf of the music teachers, thank you for your ongoing support of the arts and the amazing band, chorus, orchestra, and theatre programs at each district school.

Spring Chess with Coach Marty Spring Chess with Coach Marty

This week, Coach Marty will be starting the Spring ’24 Chess Program. All sessions will run from 4:45pm to 6:00pm and I have moved the Advanced Beginners from Mondays to Fridays. Chess continues to work very well online (perhaps better than in person in many ways) and offers safety and scheduling flexibility (regarding times and playing level) to the students and myself.

I have broken the online Spring ’24 Chess programs into two groups, Newcomers/Beginners and Advanced Beginners, that will each meet once a week for 10 weeks starting week of April 8th. If you are not sure which session would be right for you, just let me know, and I will advise you. If you would like to take a class, but the day/time doesn’t work for you, please let me know and I will see if I can set up another session at a different day/time.

Newcomers/Beginners

For players who don't know anything about chess and for those beginners who know how to play a little, but want to learn what they should do to be a better chess player. Learn the rules of this great centuries' old game and get started playing and having FUN! Get a quick overview of how to win a chess match -- not just the checkmating of your opponent, but how to get to that point. Online Zoom lecture and worksheet puzzle sessions and class chess play with www.lichess.org internet accounts will be used to teach you.

Schedule:

10 sessions on Wednesdays from 4:45 pm to 6:00 pm starting on April 10th and continuing on April 17, 24; May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; and Jun 5 and 12.

Advanced Beginners

For players who know the rules of chess and have either taken a beginner's course or have played sufficiently to have some idea of what they are trying to do and how to do it. Now it's time to use your knowledge to beat your parents, friends, and schoolmates at the game, as well as prepare for tournament Chess play. Course topics will include checkmating positions; basic opening ideas and chess tactics; and more advanced tactics and Chess strategies. Zoom online lecture and worksheet puzzle sessions and class chess play using accounts on www.lichess.org will be used to help you become a better player. You will also learn about the active environment of kid's tournament chess, as well as the numerous resources that are available to help you learn and play the game.

Schedule:

10 sessions on Fridays from 4:45 pm to 6:00 pm starting on April 12th and continuing on April 19, 26; May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; and June 7, and 14.

The cost for each once a week, ten session program is $250 (the same per session cost as previously). Each class is limited to 8 students and acceptance is on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to reserve a spot in any of these programs, please email me and I will confirm your admittance into the program. You may then pay for the program via a check payable to Jersey Chess mailed to Jersey Chess, 91 Fox Hollow Rd., Sparta, NJ 07871 or digitally via Zelle (to account 973-729-9433) or digitally via venmo to Martin-Sobin (but be sure to mark it as payment between friends, so no fees are taken out of it). For any student taking the program who is new to my online sessions, I will arrange a free 75 minute private one on one online Zoom session at a mutually convenient time before the program begins, to make sure the student knows how the internet details work.

If you are interested, please email or text me. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

I am still continuing to give one hour or hour and 15 minutes online one on one private lessons and if you are interested, please contact me to arrange mutually convenient dates/times and costs.
