Get WalkIN'

Being Active
What's the big deal about being active?
Participating in regular physical activity decreases the risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and breast and colon cancer. In addition, an active lifestyle can improve your cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, improve your sleep, and increase your energy. However, you need not necessarily join a gym to enjoy these benefits. Walking is a great way to increase your amount of physical activity!
How much physical activity is enough?
U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines recommend at least two-and-a-half (2 ½) hours of moderate intensity activity EVERY week. Brisk walking is a great way to reach these guidelines. Of all the ways to stay fit, walking is the easiest, safest, and least expensive! It can also be the most fun — thanks to fine weather, good companions, and easily attainable goals (such as walking to a scenic spot three (3) or four (4) miles away. On city streets, in the woods, or even around an indoor track, walking is the best way to experience a surrounding landscape. If it’s too rainy for anything but an indoor treadmill, you can still read or watch TV as you walk. You can also incorporate walking into your daily routine. If you typically use motorized transportation to get from one place to another (such as working in a field), try walking the distance a few times a week instead.

We also ask that you complete three (3) brief online surveys as part of the Get WalkIN’ program. These surveys will ask you about your physical activity and your experience with the program. The first survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, and we appreciate your participation. Here is the link to the first survey: https://purdue.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cAvuLd42ZBqTH5r
Please complete the survey as soon as possible
Walking Safety
- Always wear bright colored clothing. Do not assume that you are visible to others or vehicles. Be cautious when walking.
- Always walk facing oncoming traffic.
- Use the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, look for a smooth, stable surface alongside the road. If there are guardrails, see if there is a smooth, flat surface behind the barrier where you can walk. If you need to walk on a paved shoulder, stay as far away from traffic as possible.
- Be careful on bridges and narrow shoulders of the road.
- Be sure drivers can see you. If you walk during low-light hours, such as dawn or dusk, be sure you have reflective material on your clothing or walking shoes, and carry a flashlight.
