Save your shoes -- shoe drive is on the way!

The Mineral Point Unified School District Wellness Committee is asking you to start saving your gently worn shoes for an upcoming shoe drive.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Wellness Committee to increase awareness and factors contributing to physical and mental well-being, and to encourage others to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Shoes will be given to those in need in other countries.

How can I help?

  • Go into closets, storage, garages, and around the house looking for shoes that can be given away.

  • Make sure you have permission to give the shoes away.

  • Place them in a bag, but don’t forget to keep the pairs together by tying the laces, or rubber banding them together.

  • The gently worn, used, and new shoes should be in good condition with the soles intact, dry, clean, no holes, and still have life left in them. If you wouldn’t give them to a friend, then they are not worthy to submit.

In the US alone, over 600 million pairs of shoes are thrown away per year. The materials

used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills. By donating your gently worn, used and new shoes, your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference.

SAFETY NOTICE!

To improve the traffic flow at the corner of Front St. and Iowa St. we are asking you follow these changes to provide a safe environment for the children.

All buses will pull up to the sidewalk to drop children off blocking the entrance to the parking lot. This will prevent traffic in and out of the lot during drop off and provide a safer area for the many children walking into school.

If you must enter the upper lot, it is ONLY accessible by driving east on Front St. and turning right into the lot. We ask that you do not enter from Iowa St. or turning left into the lot off of Front St.

If you are dropping your child off in the morning please drop them at the front of the building on Cothern St.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Are you prepared?

In the event of an early release due to weather or any situation that may arise, it is crucial that we have accurate contact and dismissal information in Skyward. Here are a few tips to help an emergency early release run smoothly.

1. Missed Call-If you see you missed a call from the school, please listen to your voicemail, and or check your email, before calling the school. It is most likely a message alerting you of the dismissal/event that is occurring. We need to keep our phone lines available.

2. Contact Information-Make sure your family contact information is accurate in Skyward.

3. Alerts-There are several ways you can receive a notification from the school. In your Skyward family access account please be sure the boxes are checked for the way(s) you wish to receive an alert from the District Office.

The choices are: Email, phone call and/or text message.

You can also follow our School District Facebook for announcements.

School Cancellations & Early Dismissal

When it is necessary to call off school because of inclement weather, bad driving conditions, or other emergency conditions, radio stations WDMP and WPVL are advised and school closing announcements are made on those stations between 6:30-8:00 a.m. On questionable mornings you are urged to listen to either WDMP or WPVL for any such announcement. You will also receive a message via phone and email. Please read detailed information about Skylert below. We strongly urge that you do not call the school or radio station, to ask if school will be held. This only ties up the telephone lines at a time when important emergency calls must be made.

At other times it may be necessary to dismiss school before the end of the regular school day because of bad weather conditions or other emergency reasons. Parents should plan for such emergencies and have definite plans with their children as to getting into their homes or going to a neighbor or relatives in the event the parent might not be home. Emergency early school dismissals can be a hazard to students, especially the younger

children, if parents have not planned ahead for them. Also, if the weather looks questionable, please do not call the school. If we are having an early dismissal we need every phone line. Skylert messages will be sent, and radio stations, Radio WDMP 99.3 fm WPVL 107.1 fm as well as TV channels WISC 3, WMTV 15 and WKOW 27.
