Happy Summer! And welcome to the YHS Weekly Memos, Class of 2029 students and families! My goal for this communication is to be full of all the information you may need throughout the summer. Please refer to this if you have questions, but as always, you can call the school and we will get back to you as soon as we can. However, we will have a limited staff, so know that we will call or return an email when we are able.

Thank you for your continued support and I hope you have a safe, fun, and relaxing summer. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Thanks,

Amanda

Summer School Summer School

If you are eligible for summer school because you did not earn credit for a course, teachers will have already reached out to you regarding this option. School counselors will share information about options for summer classes for make-up credit (or to repeat a course) with individual families ASAP.

Junior Transcripts (Class of 2026) Junior Transcripts (Class of 2026)

School counselors will be updating junior transcripts over the next few days and they will be emailed to students and their parents no later than July 1. If you are going to visit schools before July 1, please reach out to Ms. Luby (eluby@yorkschools.org) for an unofficial transcript. Please note that this earlier transcript will not have an updated GPA or decile, but the one received after 7/1 will be up-to-date.

School Counselors School Counselors

Our school counselors (just like teachers) will be taking a much deserved summer break! They will be unavailable June 17 - August 19, but will be back in the office on August 20. Please know that they will not be checking email during this time.

If you have a mental health emergency, call 911 or go to your closest emergency department. To speak to a mental health professional, 24 hours a day, call 988

Class Schedules Class Schedules

All student schedules will be live in PowerSchool on August 15.

We will not be making any schedule changes over the summer. If a student would like to add or drop a course they must fill out this form first. We will only be making schedule changes for the following reasons:

  1. The student has a failure from the previous semester in a prerequisite course.

  2. The student completed a course previously that is on the schedule repeat; this may include courses from summer school.

  3. Classes are out of sequence.

  4. Seniors are missing a graduation requirement.

Any student who would like to add or drop a class must fill out the Google Form and will meet with their school counselor if they are eligible between 9/4 - 9/9. An administrator will then approve or deny the request by 9/12. Any withdrawals after 9/15 will be noted on transcripts as WP or WF.

Freshman Orientation Freshman Orientation

We have an awesome freshmen orientation planned to welcome the Class of 2029. This will be on Tuesday, September 2. All 9th grade students will spend the entire day and will become familiar with the building, meet their teachers, and have a great first day of high school. More information will be coming throughout the summer.

We also host a parent breakfast for all Class of 2029 families the morning of orientation, so you will want to save the date.

One-to-One Laptops One-to-One Laptops

We are excited to officially announce that YHS is going to one-to-one next year for computers for students. We will no longer allow students to bring their own devices which will help us with our cybersecurity and ability to manage educational programs and platforms more seamlessly. Here is an FAQ sheet provided by our YSD Tech Director, Eric Lawson.

Cell Phones Cell Phones

York High School is going to be cell phone free next year. A phone free school is when all personal electronic devices (cell phones, smart watches) are securely locked away and inaccessible for the entire school day. We have spent a lot of time as a district talking about the importance of mental health and the impact cell phone and social media use has on our students. Jonathan Haidt, author of "The Anxious Generation" (which many of your teachers have read this year) has so much insight about this topic, but one quote has stuck with me: "The phone is an experience blocker. You spend a lot less time in the presence of other people. You're not with your friends. You're sleeping less, you're in nature less, you read fewer books, you don't have time for anything else, you have less of almost everything."

The district hosted "Screenagers" events sponsored by YORKWISE, York Parks & Rec, Choose to be Healthy, Strong Girls United, and White Pines to show a united front on the need to take back our classrooms and support students as they learn in our buildings.

We, as an entire faculty, are not viewing this as a punishment to our students. We view this as an opportunity to get our kids back. Please join us in supporting our phone free school next year. We will have more information available as we develop plans, but wanted you all to know that students will not be allowed to have phones or smart watches during the school day next year.

If you have questions regarding this plan and how we, as a district and building, plan to move forward, please join us for an informal conversation on Tuesday, July 15 @ 5:00. We will meet in the York High School Library.
