January is School Board Appreciation Month
Every January is recognized as School Board Recognition Month. School districts across the country recognize and honor those who serve on local school boards. Board service is an unpaid, voluntary commitment, embraced by only a select few within the community. Through their selfless efforts, trustees play a crucial role in ensuring our district maintains an outstanding educational experience for all students, attracts and retains the best staff, and remain good stewards of taxpayer dollars.
School board members are the largest group of elected officials in the state, numbering more than 7,000 statewide. They represent a diverse array of backgrounds—farmers, doctors, business owners, retirees, and young professionals—individuals you encounter in daily life, yet whose significant contributions often go unnoticed. Their collective impact extends beyond the board room; they are actively shaping the future.
We are honored to celebrate and recognize our seven elected trustees for their ongoing commitment and service to Wylie ISD. These servant leaders are responsible for more than 19,200 students, 2,600 employees, and 20 campuses and help represent the voice of the community.
We greatly appreciate their contributions and governance of our great school district. If you see a school board member out and about in the community, please take a moment to thank them for their work. Take a moment to honor the work they are doing to help your students be bold and let them know how much their efforts are valued on behalf of the entire community.
Please join Wylie ISD as we celebrate School Board Recognition Month throughout the month of January.

Burnett Student’s Art Buzzes in Austin
Texas Art Education Association selected eighth-grader Scarlet Walling’s artwork to be part of the 2023 Youth Art Month Exhibition. Her work of art, “Bee,” will be displayed at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin throughout the month of March. This exhibit will feature over 100 works of art created by seniors all the way down to pre-kindergarteners from across the state.
Using pastels, it took Walling about a week to create her piece in Michelle Beck’s first-period art class at Burnett Junior High.

College Panel: Class of 2023 Graduates Return to East
Last year’s seniors returned to Wylie East for one last Think College Thursday. Each year, WEHS counselors host a college panel, inviting former students back to share their college experience with the current senior class.
Similar to a daytime talk show, WEHS Counselor Mandy Coers interviewed college freshmen in front of an audience of seniors. As they sat on the stage in the auditorium, Coers asked the alumni about their first semester in college.
“We talk to them all the time about their futures,” Coers said. “It’s nice to have someone in college speak with them.”
