A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy

Dear Families,

I hope you all had a fantastic Fourth of July weekend and are enjoying the summer so far!

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the first two days of Summer Rising. While Day 1 had a few kinks to work through (as expected with any new start), Day 2 was a significant improvement and things were running much smoother. We're excited for the weeks ahead and grateful for your patience as we continue to fine-tune our routines.

As a quick reminder, there are two separate GRYC organizations running here at PS 88Q, so if you're starting this week, it's important to know which group your child was accepted to. Your child will either be in GRYC 81Q or GRYC 88Q. If you're unsure, please click the link below to inquire about which team and group your child belongs to. We want to make sure everyone is in the right place!

Entrance & Exit Information:

  • For GRYC 81Q, please enter and exit through the old main door on Catalpa Avenue.

  • For GRYC 88Q, please use the school yard entrance on 68th Road.

For those of you whose children started last week, a quick reminder: please make sure they’re wearing their Summer Rising t-shirt and name tag. This helps us get all 820 campers in the building much more efficiently!

Also, just a heads-up on the schedule: our teachers are part of Summer Rising from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, until August 7th. During this time, we have exciting learning activities planned for the kids. After 12:00 pm, the GRYC team takes over and fills the afternoon with fun activities, making sure the kids are engaged all day long. Your GRYC Director will share the daily schedule with you, so you’ll know what to expect each day.

Director GRYC 88Q: Kevin Goodish (kgoodish@thegryc.org)

Director GRYC 81Q: Paul Hoffman/Jari Barkhouse (phoffman@thegryc.org/jbarkhouse@thegryc.org)

Please note, all Summer Rising sites are required to hold a minimum of two evacuation drills. We will be holding one of ours tomorrow, Monday, July 7th.

If you have any questions, need to arrange an early pick-up, or have concerns about activities, your first point of contact should be the GRYC Director and their counselors. However, please feel free to reach out to me directly as well if needed. (loshaughnessy@schools.nyc.gov)

Looking forward to a wonderful and enriching summer together!
