People...

“Personal relationships involve nature’s most mysterious forces. Outside judgements are easy to make & hard to verify.” Walter Isaacson wrote that in his excellent biography of Albert Einstein, but it could describe any human relationships. Guess what? Leadership is a people business so you will spend your life not quite knowing what will happen next. Every situation & every person will be unique. But you can increase the odds of choosing the right thing to do if you remember these ten things about people. People have emotions & a life outside work; are not machines or interchangeable parts; want to be safe, want control, want to do work that matters, want to work with people they like, & to be treated fairly; make mistakes; are creative; and want to make progress. Donations to the Community Foundation can be made at NASB for Police Outreach programs, Senior Center, Community Center Scholarships for swim lessons & memberships, or designated toward the greatest need.

Upcoming Agendas

City Council will hold public hearing to consider 353 redevelopment project @ 400 St. Louis & ordinance to amend Development Plan; 2nd reading to adopt 2018 International Building Codes; consider right-of-way vacation in Lookout Heights on S. Titus, & appropriations.

Historic Preservation Commission will review administratively approved COAs for new roof at 215 S. Francis & 520 S. KC Ave., paint at 244 E. Broadway; Commission will consider COAs for signage at 216 Spring St. & guttering at 522 Elms Blvd.

Key Project Updates

  • Bids received to replace Police Station roof will be taken to CIP to approve funding;
  • Punchlist completed for N Jesse James overlay.
  • Construction documents are under development for stabilitization planned at the Hall of Waters; bidding is projected to begin after the holidays.
  • Work is progressing with McGrath Consulting's Market Salary & Benefit Plan, other communities in our recruitment market were surveyed, current salaries compared to the market & final adjustments are being made relative to our financial ability.
  • Candidates for Police Chief will be interviewed this week, we are pleased with the quality of applicants that have expressed interest in the position.
  • Tri-County Mental Health in partnership with the ESPD has assigned a mental health professional to the ESPD one day/week. Partnership brings additional resources to officers. Individuals in crisis need additional resources than can be provided by the police, EMS, & the hospital alone. We are in hopes this new direction in policing results in better outcomes for community families.
  • Complaints for property maintenance can sometimes be a symptom of a greater problem. Our Neighborhood Services seeks to define what type of assistance is needed, while solving the property maintenance issue. Many times, the person's church family & neighbors can bring the support needed to solve other issues that are not as visible as poor property maintenance. We are looking to address the cause of the problem.
  • Project list is being developed for ARPA funds & partnership projects are under discussion.

Choose Your Attitude!

To create a vibrant future for their commercial district, local business owners & other Main Street supporters started the Downtown Excelsior Partnership. With the community behind its mission, the town began to embrace saving downtown. The community’s dedication to downtown’s growth is evident from the rising local wine & beer industry to the increased number of young entrepreneurs setting up shop downtown. The number of tourists—both the day-trippers & weekend getaway-ers—has also increased. This growth in tourism is credited in part to the promotional efforts from The Elms Hotel and Spa & DEP Community Improvement District. Read it National Main Street Center blog, Chicago, IL.
