The snow has proved to be a very welcome medium for students creative endeavors
Dear Families,
The week has been full of energy. It has been good to be able to get outside more these last few warmer days. Everyone, students and staff, have flexed beautifully as they have experienced various absences. Mel will be returning Monday and I am back after a bout with pneumonia - doing well now! As we move toward the holiday break, we’ll be working to keep the days predictable and settled, building in additional social and hands-on activities. We’re definitely looking forward to Gifts for Giving which is always deeply satisfying..
4/5 graders had the opportunity to work with a math consultant this week from the Ongoing Assessment Project (OGAP). Kat, along with other teachers from the district, have participated in professional development with OGAP this year as part of the district focus on math.
Reminder about exchanging gifts among students: We ask that any gift exchanges among students not occur at school. Please find a way for that to happen at another time and place. Thanks.
Lunch help: We need lunch help next week on Thursday and the following week we need a volunteer for Tuesday. Please look ahead for dates in January and email me or sign up directly on the calendar if you can help out. Thanks so much.
Please email me cjohnston@acsdvt.org or call if you have any questions (802-545-3301).
Warmly, Christina

From the School Nurse: Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Information
The VT Department of Health is reporting a significant rise in pertussis (whooping cough), a very contagious respiratory disease that often affects school-aged children. We are not aware of any cases in ACSD, and hope the information below will help prevent and treat any cases that occur.
Symptoms & Treatment: Early symptoms look like a common cold (runny nose, low fever, mild cough) and usually appear 5-10 days after exposure. Later Symptoms can include severe coughing fits with a “whoop”, vomiting during/after coughing fits, difficulty sleeping, struggling to breathe, and rib fractures. Early treatment is crucial to prevent severe symptoms and shorten illness. Students/staff diagnosed with pertussis must complete 5 full days of antibiotics before returning to school; without antibiotics, they must stay home for 21 days from the start of the cough.
Spread & Prevention: Pertussis spreads easily through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. Help prevent illness by staying up to date on Tdap/DTap vaccines, washing hands, covering coughs, and keeping students home when sick. Good rest, nutrition, hydration, and time outdoors also support overall health.
For questions, contact your school nurse or healthcare provider, and visit ACSD’s illness guidance or www.healthvermont.gov/whoopingcough for more resources.

A message from H.O.P.E
HOPE in Middlebury wants to remind families that we run a free Holiday Shop to support gift giving for kids. Parents with income of up to 200% of the federal poverty level are encouraged to make an appointment to visit and select new toys, games, gadgets, books, etc for their children, birth to 18. We also offer a family gift to each household – kitchen items, linens, and more. To reach HOPE, visit https://www.hope-vt.org/ or call 802-388-3608
