Dear Talley Street Community,

For the 25-26 school year, Talley Street will have a new Community in Schools Site Coordinator. I would like to introduce Antonio McGaha. His bio is below. Our Site Coordinator for the last school year was Dr. Angela Williams. Dr. Williams is moving to a leadership position with CIS. We will miss seeing Dr. Williams every day, but she will still be at Talley Street occasionally. We are very excited to have Mr. McGaha join the Talley Team!

Dear Talley Street Families,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Antonio McGaha, and I am the new Site Coordinator with Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta. I will work with our scholars to support their academic, regular attendance, and personal development goals. Communities In Schools' mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

What our scholars can expect to receive:

  • Academic Support and Progress Monitoring
  • Mentoring and Advocacy -G.E.N.T.S and Y.L.O.E Programs
  • Choose Success Community Service Project
  • Literacy Project
  • Incentives and Rewards to encourage and motivate student attendance, good behavior, and academic achievement.

Once I receive the parent consent forms permitting vetted scholars to participate, I will meet with them to begin working towards achieving their unique goal of thriving as leaders. The program is designed not to interfere with their instruction during the day; however, we will tailor it to their needs, incorporating elements such as lunch break, check and connect, and special celebrations to acknowledge their achievements.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above mentioned information, please email me at amcgaha@cisatlanta.org, antonio.mcgaha@csdecatur.net or stop by room 206 to speak with me.

Sincerely,

Antonio McGaha, BSW | Site Coordinator

Talley Robotics Challenge Teams (4th and 5th Grade): Now Accepting Student Applications

Are you passionate about STEM? Do you enjoy problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity? Are you in 4th or 5th grade? Then the Talley First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Challenge Team may be for you! Discover the thrill of engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork. Design and program LEGO robots, research real-world challenges, and present innovative solutions in exciting team competitions. BRING RECORDERS FOR MUSIC!

Parents, this is another reminder for your child to have the recorder ready for music class. Students must have their recorder to bring after Labor Day, the first week of September. Please help your child remember to have it at school before September begins. Students have worked so hard in 3rd and 4th grade last year and now we build and add more notes, more songs, composing and performing.

If you need to purchase another one, here is the link.

I do keep extras at school, some new to purchase (first come first serve), some used but sanitized to borrow.

Thank you,

Ms. Jessup, Talley Music Program

Plastic Film Update

Many thanks to everyone who participated in our first plastic film collection of the year. As a school, we diverted an estimated 55 pounds of plastic film from the landfill. House points were awarded to the top three houses that brought in the most plastic film: Amistad (first place), Reveur (second place) and Altruismo (third place). Way to go! Let’s see if we can beat last year’s collection of more than 850 pounds over the school year. Our next collection for house points will be Wednesday, September 10.

NOTE: Items that fall into the plastic film category include: stretchy plastic around school supplies, reusable zipper-top bags, shipping mailers, grocery and produce bags, bubble wrap, bread bags and newspaper bags. Rule of thumb: If you can push your finger through the plastic and stretch it, then it’s plastic film. Learn more here.

Send Us Your Old Socks!

The Talley Green Team continues to collect old socks for textile recycling. Socks may be any brand in any condition. Single socks, socks with holes…send them in! But all donations MUST be clean. This program is for used socks only, not donations of new pairs. Nor are stockings, tights or pantyhose accepted. Bring your donations to Mrs. Roberts in the Talley Media Center.

Join the Green Team

Are you passionate about sustainability? Would you like to help make Talley a zero-waste school? Then the Talley Green Team may be the perfect activity for you!

The Green Team meets after school (from roughly 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm) on Tuesdays for participation in various sustainability projects and Fridays for our schoolwide recycling collection. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are welcome to join us. Complete our Sign-up Form.

Attendance is NOT mandatory. Parents should select "Green Team" in Pick Up Patrol on the days their child plans to attend and include how their child will get home afterward. Please direct questions to Mrs. Roberts at kathryn.roberts@csdecatur.net. Thank you!
