US HISTORY II

Mr. Rimas and Ms. Livingston's US History II classes are starting their unit on Identity and Community. This past week, students reflected on what "American" means to them and how national identities are made up of unique individual identities. During class, students interviewed teachers and staff on their perception of "American". The day was very informative and interactive. Thank you to Dr. Daly, Mr. Okaka, Mr. Bedar, Ms. Hays, Mr. Jett, Ms. Kiwanuka, and Ms. Wobbe for participating!

CULINARY SPECIAL GUEST

Students in our Honors Culinary class had the incredible opportunity to learn from Chef Trenita, the private chef to NBA champion and superstar Jayson Tatum!

Chef Trenita led a hands-on lesson featuring three different styles of guacamole, while also sharing her journey into the private chef world. She spoke about what it takes to break into the field as a female in a male-dominated industry, the dedication behind cooking for professional athletes, and how food plays a key role in performance and recovery.

It was an inspiring experience for students to see how passion, hard work, and skill can open doors to unique culinary careers beyond the restaurant kitchen. Huge thank you to Mr. Marston for hosting this and Chef Trenita for giving our students such valuable insight into the private chef life!

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Mr. Poillucci's Construction Technology classes have been hard at work this past month! In Construction Technology I, students put their Lego skills to test in a challenging competition that highlighted the importance of communication and collaboration in design and construction. They also unloaded and moved over 700 board feet of lumber into the shop for upcoming projects, while students in Construction Technology II took on the task of inventorying the materials. Meanwhile, Construction Technology IV students have been learning how to properly set up, level, and operate an optical builder's level, applying their skills to capture elevation data in the shop and the WMS gardel level.

Check out this document for more details and photos of what the classes have working on!

PSATs/SATs

PSATs

All students in grades 10 and 11 will take the PSATs on Thursday, October 16. The PSATs are a practice version of the SAT, a test that many colleges and universities use for admissions purposes. By offering this test to our students at school for free, we are ensuring that all students have access to the practice test and the many free test prep and future planning resources available after completing the test. Students will participate in a Digital Readiness Check during Advisory on October 10 and will take the test during the first three blocks of the day on October 16. Students must use their school-issued Chromebook for the test. When results are available, students will learn how to use their scores to prepare for future SAT administrations and explore the tools offered by the College Board. Students may also qualify for national recognition and scholarship programs. For more information, please visit the CollegeBoard website or contact your student's school counselor.

SATs

Seniors who registered to take the SATs at WHS on Thursday, October 16 are reminded to arrive at school by 8:30 AM with their school-issued Chromebook. This SAT administration is only available to WHS seniors who registered in advance. Please contact your student's school counselor with any questions.

Students in grades 9 and 12 (except those taking the SAT) will have a late start on October 16. School will begin at 11:30. Students who wish to take the bus to school in the morning will be able to work independently in the WMS Garden Level from 8:30 - 11:30.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress Reports for quarter 1 will be distributed during Advisory this Friday, October 10. As always, grades are also available to view on PowerSchool.

SCHOOL PHOTOS & MAKE-UP PICTURE DAY

Make-Up Picture Day

Make-up picture day is this Thursday, October 9. Any student who missed picture day at the beginning of the year or who would like to retake their photo are welcome to do so.

School Photos

Photos from picture day at the beginning of the year are available to view and purchase! Parents/guardians who are listed on PowerSchool should have received an email from Legacy Studios with a direct link to view and purchase their student's photos.

If you did not receive or lost your link, you can still access the photos by:

  • Scanning your student's QR code (given to them on picture day)
  • Entering your student's unique code (printed on the sheet with the QR code) on the Legacy Studios online gallery page
    • If your student has lost their QR code or does not know their unique code, you can use Legacy Studios' Find My Code tool by entering your student's last name and student ID number. Please note: student ID numbers are available on the PowerSchool website (not the app).

Sports and Events Photos

If you're interested in viewing and purchasing any pictures that Legacy Studios takes at our games or other school events, you can follow this link and use this password: 362426.

Please direct any questions to Emily Ollero at emily.ollero@watertown.k12.ma.us or to Legacy Studios at customercare@legacystudios.com.

CLASS DUES

All students are asked to pay $15 each year in class dues, with an additional $5 for late payments, to support the activities, events, and scholarships of their respective classes. Students who have not paid their yearly dues will, unfortunately, be turned away from class events.

Dues can be paid with cash, checks (made out to the City of Watertown), or online through ParentSquare. There are four separate posts, one per grade, from Mr. Brewer with an embedded payment form. To pay for multiple years, increase the quantity when checking out (ex: 2 years = $30). If you aren't sure if your student owes dues from a previous year, please reach out to your student's class advisors (listed below).

If for any reason your family needs assistance with these dues, please connect with your student's class advisors. All information will remain confidential.

PERSONAL COMPUTERS

Students are no longer permitted to use personal laptops during class. All students are required to bring their school-issued Chromebook, fully charged, to school each day.

If a student experiences any difficulties with their Chromebook, they should see Mr. Hall (Jett) in the library for assistance. Consequences will be issued for students who do not bring their charged Chromebook to class and are unprepared for learning.

CELL PHONE ATTESTATION FORM

As outlined in our updated cell phone procedure, students are required to either download the Doorman app, lock their phone in the main office for the day, or leave their phone at home.

In partnership with families, we ask that the parents/guardians of students who decide to leave their phone at home complete our cell phone attestation form. The form can be used for the entirety of this year or specific dates only. Please also complete this form if your student does not have a cell phone.

When a student notifies their teacher that they left their phone at home, the form will be checked to certify the information, and a phone call home may be made.
