Countywide Learning Leading Award winners!
MCPSS is pleased to announce the district-level Learning Leading Award winners for the 2024-2025 school year: Amberly Hardy of Dodge Elementary School, DeCari Carter of Forest Hill, Caitlyn Zeine of Phillips Preparatory School, and Morghan Cooley of Davidson High School.
Each of our 90 schools selected a Learning Leading student representative, who will be recognized on social media as well as at the Learning Leading Awards Ceremony at Murphy High School on April 17 at 6 p.m. The four countywide winners were selected from the 90 school winners.
The MCPSS Learning Leading students all have a few things in common: They are kind, they go out of their way to help others, they are unique and talented, and they have the utmost character and integrity to represent their schools with honor.

CLAS Schools of Distinction: Hankins and Washington Middle Schools
Booker T. Washington Middle School and Hankins Middle School are among 32 schools statewide to be named 2024 CLAS Schools of Distinction. This award recognizes school programs that serve as outstanding educational models for other schools in Alabama. Both schools were recognized for their Leadership Officer Training Corps (LOTC) programs.
Mobile County Public Schools was the first school system in Alabama to offer LOTC, and now has programs in 15 middle schools. LOTC is a leadership course with a focus on character development. It not only introduces drill and other JROTC elements to students, but also VEX IQ robotics, drone technology, physical fitness, and other useful skills.
LOTC cadets also perform community service, such as joining an annual beautification project in conjunction with MCPSS JROTC at Oaklawn Cemetery and helping unload donated items from the MCPSS Stuff the Bus toy drive. (In the top photo, Washington Middle students are assisting with the toy drive; the photo at right shows Hankins LOTC cadets.)
Washington and Hankins Middle Schools will be honored at an awards luncheon in May, when they'll find out if they are among the eight schools to be named as a CLAS Banner School.
