HMS September News Letter
Let's Go, 2026 - 2027!!

Dear Parents and Hawks!
Welcome Back, Hawks! 🚀
We are so excited to welcome you to the 2026–2027 school year! This year, we are taking a Back to Basics approach at Haysville Middle School as we refocus on the foundational skills that help students succeed. We will place a renewed emphasis on writing to learn, explicit vocabulary instruction, meaningful collaboration, and strong academic habits. Our goal is simple: get back to what matters most and build a strong foundation for the future.
A New Direction for Personal Devices 📵
One of the biggest changes this year will be the implementation of the State of Kansas’ new cell phone and personal electronic device law. We understand that this change may bring a variety of feelings for students and families—some may feel anxious about the transition, while others may welcome the change. As parents of middle school students ourselves, we understand the unique challenges families face. Please know that we have thoughtfully planned for this transition and are committed to keeping every HMS student safe, supported, and heard as we navigate these changes together.
Rethinking 1:1 Chromebooks 💻
This year, HMS is also moving away from a 1:1 Chromebook model for our middle school students. This change is part of our effort to provide a rigorous curriculum, continue developing students’ technology skills, and create healthier limits around screen exposure throughout the school day. While students will no longer carry an individual Chromebook throughout the day, Chromebooks will remain an important instructional tool and will be available for students to use when assignments and learning activities call for them.
Back to Basics. Forward to the Future. ⚡
Our focus this year is not about going backward—it is about building a stronger foundation for where our students are going next. Together, we will get Back to Basics and prepare our Hawks for the future.
