Meet one of our Music Teachers!

My name is Carolynn Langston, and I am one of Kinnaman’s music teachers. I have been teaching elementary music to children since 1996!! I taught in New York for many years before returning to Portland, OR (where I was born). This is my third year at Kinnaman, and I love making music with our community! When not teaching music, I spend my time with my cats and family. I also enjoy cooking, gardening, watching SciFi, doing crafts, and singing. I’m an unapologetic “Swiftie” but I listen to so many artists, genres, and styles I don’t have enough room to list them all here. (Check out Rose Betts - she’s currently my new favorite singer-songwriter.) Helping Kinnaman students develop their music skills is one of my favorite things to do. I ❤️ Kinnaman!

Summer School Update

We wanted to let you know that due to budget constraints, our summer school programs for elementary schools will be limited this summer.

We understand the importance of these programs in supporting our students' academic success and personal growth. Our goal is to focus on closing the achievement gap by offering spots to students who are significantly below grade level. This summer, we will be prioritizing literacy and math skills to ensure our students receive the support they need to succeed.

Our commitment to the success and well-being of our students remains a priority. If additional funds become available from the state, we are hopeful that we may be able to expand our programming in the future. We will keep you informed of any updates as they arise.

A NOTE FROM YOUR SCHOOL NURSE ABOUT DENTAL HEALTH

Cavities are one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood and if left untreated it can lead to pain, infections, trouble eating or speaking, and disrupt students' learning. Poor oral health can cause students to miss more school and receive lower grades, but the good news is cavities are preventable!

Reasons to See a Dentist:

● Pain or swelling in the mouth, face, or neck

● Difficulty chewing or swallowing

● Tooth sensitivity

● Bleeding or sore gums

Good Habits for Healthy Teeth:

· Brush your teeth twice a day – spend 2 or 3 minutes each time you brush your teeth. You can use a timer or play your favorite song to pass the time.

● Floss your teeth– it is best for everyone over the age of 2 to floss daily.

● Eat a well-balance meal – limit sticky food and high sugar snacks.

● Talk with your healthcare provider or dentist about using a fluoride supplement and dental sealants.

● Schedule routine dental cleanings and exams every 6 months – most dental practices continue to provide services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Call your dentist prior to your appointment to discuss all safety precautions and for any questions or concerns.

Dental Resources: ● OHP Dental Benefits ● Find a dentist near you ● Low-cost dental care ● Children with special needs – Appletree dentistry, Providence Specialty Pediatric Dental Clinic , Medical Teams International Dental Van for low/no cost

Please feel free to reach out to your school nurse, kori_carbonaro@beaverton.k12.or.us, if you have questions or need additional advice.
