🎶Jag Choir Notes🎶 September 2026
September 2026

🍂 Welcome to September — Jag Choir is Ready to Shine! 🎶
What an exciting beginning to the school year! The first few weeks have flown by, and our choir room is already buzzing with music, energy, laughter, and unforgettable moments.
August was all about laying a strong foundation—learning our music, setting clear expectations, building lasting relationships, and welcoming new faces. Now that we're in September, it's time to find our unique sound and hit our rhythm!
This month, our talented singers are gearing up for our very first concert of the year. Our show choirs are passionately bringing their competition shows to life, students are stepping into amazing leadership roles, and Mr. Gagon is continuing his enriching student-teaching journey with us. So much is happening in the Boulder Creek Choir Program, and we embrace every minute of it!
As you explore this month's newsletter, you'll get a peek into our hard work, what's on the horizon, and the incredible individuals who make our program exceptional.
A heartfelt thank you to our students, families, Choir Council, and Booster organization for your unwavering support. We've only just begun this journey, and there's already so much to celebrate together.
Here's to September and all the beautiful music ahead! ❤️🖤🎶
What is needed for our Choir Concerts?
Costume Corner
As the concert season draws near, it's crucial that your student is fully prepared. This includes having the appropriate undergarments, footwear, and other accessories necessary for their performances.
We have a unique partnership with NatCo Dancewear. We encourage students to visit Nathalie Velazquez's store, located not too far from Boulder Creek, where Nathalie and the company will personally fit each student with her character shoe inventory to each student. She has stocked her shelves so students can walk out the door with merchandise for the concert season.
Help Wanted 💪🆘
Help is needed and necessary in order to produce our amazing student performances.
We are currently looking for help with the following areas:

🎶 STUDENT TEACHER SPOTLIGHT
Meet Mr. David Gagon!
If you’ve been around the choir room lately, you’ve probably noticed another director in front of our choirs! We are thrilled to have Mr. David Gagon joining the Boulder Creek Choir family this fall as our student teacher from Northern Arizona University!
Mr. Gagon is spending the first 10 weeks of the school year working alongside our singers—rehearsing, teaching, conducting, and experiencing all of the wonderfully organized chaos that comes with being a choir director! 😄
Even more exciting: Mr. Gagon will be conducting at our first choir concert! We can’t wait for our families to see the work he and our students have been doing together.
🎤 10 Questions with Mr. Gagon
We thought our Jag Choir families should get to know him a little better!
1. What made you want to become a choir teacher?
I actually tried avoiding it for a long time! When I went to Red Mountain High School in Mesa, my choir teacher made me audition for NAU's music school during JazzMad. I did it as a joke, but when I applied for colleges the only one that accepted me was NAU. The stars aligned, and now I couldn't be more happy where I'm at. I'm really passionate about language, linguistics, and the rehearsal process.
2. What is your favorite piece you’ve ever performed?
My favorite piece is a collection of choir songs with string orchestra called "Lost Bird" by Christopher Tin. I sang "Lost Birds" with NAU's Shrine of the Ages this last May. It was kind of like my senior song. You need to listen to the whole piece, but my favorite is "There Will Come Soft Rains."
3. What is your dream choir piece to conduct someday?
I'm a nerd about symphonic choir pieces with orchestra (I played bass and violin growing up). My dream piece would be "Earth Symphony" by Jake Runestad. Listen to the fourth movement if you want to listen to a killer alto section.
4. What is your go-to karaoke song? 🎤
"Don't You Remember" by Adele
5. What is your favorite musical? 🎭
I love the revival of "Once on This Island," the production for it is so cool!
6. Coffee, energy drink, soda, or water? ☕️
Coffee all the way! My family and I even drink a little cup of coffee before we go to bed.
7. What song instantly puts you in a good mood?
"Not Strong Enough" by boygenius
8. If you weren't becoming a music teacher, what would you be doing?
I would be a high school Spanish teacher for a while, but I'd eventually become a college professor teaching a foreign language, linguistics research, phonetics, and second language acquisition.
9. What has surprised you most about Boulder Creek Choir so far?
Honestly, it's been the students! These students are so musically literate, independent, and strong leaders within their community. I'd be so lucky if I was able to establish the culture that Boulder Creek has in my future choir program.
10. Finish this sentence: “A great choir is…”
...a safe space where students can challenge themselves individually while working towards a common goal as a group.
We are incredibly grateful to have Mr. Gagon learning, teaching, and making music alongside us this semester. Make sure you say hello when you see him—and be ready to cheer extra loudly when he directs the choirs at our first concert! 🎶❤️🖤
