8th Grade Students and Families

It is that time of year - applications for the high school specialty programs are open! The application link is now live. To find it, go to the NHCS Signature Programs webpage, and choose the programs to which you wish to apply from the list on the left of the page. Each program page has an "Apply" link - that is where they will find the Google Form application (linked in blue box). You need only complete the Google Form once and can select up to three programs to apply to, but can find the app on each program's page. THE STUDENT HAS TO FILL OUT THE APPLICATION FORM FROM THEIR NHCS STUDENT EMAIL ACCOUNT. PARENTS/GUARDIANS SHOULD NOT FILL OUT THE APPLICATION. The application has to be filled out in one sitting - if you quit in the middle, you have to start over. I have more specific information about each specialty program. If you are interested in a specific program, please let me know and I can send that info. Thanks!

Excellence in Reading Program through MENSA
zoom_out_map

Earn a commemorative certificate in recognition of your outstanding achievement and get an Excellence in Reading T-shirt, too!

To participate in the Mensa for Kids Excellence in Reading Program, follow these steps:

  1. Select a list from the grade level bands listed below. Remember to read to the level of your ability or interest, regardless of your age or grade level.
  2. Print the appropriate list and track each book you read by checking it off and recording the date it was read, along with a rating. Electronic signatures and check-offs are not permitted. The form must be completed by hand. We operate on the honor system, and we encourage honesty in this way.
  3. Please submit the original form used, even if it is very messy. Copying the form over to make it neater may result in rejection of the form. We reserve the right to request additional confirmation of completion of the program and/or to refuse to grant recognition.
  4. Once you’ve completed an entire list, both the reader and an adult will need to sign the list as verification and return it and the order form to the Mensa Foundation at the address provided. Once we’ve received your signed list and verified it, we’ll send you a recognition certificate and T-shirt. Please allow 6 weeks for delivery.
  5. You may use five nonfiction books to replace any five books from the same grade-level segment.

Mauk's Co-teaching Schedule

As an exciting opportunity this year, I am consistently paired with two teachers daily to co-teach in their classrooms. I am working with Ms. Buggy in 6th grade and Mr. Allen in 8th grade. If you would like more information about this partnership, please reach out!

Student AIG Meetings

Students meet with me as an entire AIG group once a month. This meeting occurs during Mastery from 8:25-9:00. Students who are identified in the AIG program are expected to attend.

6th grade - 1st Friday of the month

7th grade - 2nd Friday of the month

8th grade - 3rd Friday of the month

Ms. Mauk will also hold other small group sessions during electives and Mastery time. These meetings will be by invitation and could be for any of the following activities:

  • academic progress checks
  • independent study/project
  • book club discussion
  • small group projects
  • accelerate course selected
  • 8th grade: high school information and planning

Mauk's Mastery Options

Students can come out of their regular Mastery during the week to attend one or more of Mauk's Mastery options. These stay the same every week. Students can attend every week or off and on as they choose depending on what's happening with their regular Mastery. It is polite to let your Mastery teacher know that you will be attending one of Mauk's groups, but Mauk takes attendance and sends it out to staff. Students in an assigned reading/math Mastery have to have permission from that teacher to come to one of Mauk's Mastery groups.

Monday Math Madness - we do crazy math and logic puzzles and sometimes stoopid hard math problems to challenge our abilities

Tuesday Book Mania - join us to talk all things books! We will discuss fandoms and series and maybe even read something together

Wednesday is Extended Morning Meeting - no Mauk Mastery

Thursday Creative Writing - students will be given prompts and story starters to get the creative muscles working. Many pieces created during this time will be submitted for publication in the Cape Fear Voices Teen Scene Magazine

Friday AIG grade-level Meetings - Mauk meets with each individual grade's group of AIG students for updates

MathCounts practices

Mr. Lopez in 7th grade is coaching the team. He will be holding practices after school on Tuesdays in Mr. Lopez's room 515 from 3:45-4:45. Students are responsible for transportation. The district competition will be in March.

Student-Led Clubs

Student-led clubs begin in this month. Twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Thursday, MGMS will run a special schedule providing an hour at the end of the day for students to meet in interest-based clubs. Students have to commit to attending a club for a semester.
Remember that there are all sorts of opportunities for enrichment, extra credit, and challenging your skills in the AIG Google Classroom.

Practices are being held on Wednesdays at 8:15 in the media center. The deadline for joining the team has passed. Please contact our Media Specialist, Ms. Williams (amber.williams@nhcs.net) if you're interested in participating.
