✅ From the Editor
- Our newsletters often begin with testimonies from a variety of people -- students, parents, teachers, etc. Sadly, the well has run dry, so I am looking for more contributions. If you have an opportunity to collect or share reflections "in their own words," then I would be happy to receive them!
✅ LGBTQ+ Adults in Catholic Education (Somewhere USA and UK)
- "LGBTQIA+ persons will have to face more rejection than the average person throughout their lives. So yes, we have to learn how to cope with the opinions of others. I get that, but we should all be able to feel welcomed, safe, and loved in our school communities."
- "If I’m found out, I’m fearful that I’ll get fired and cause a huge scandal."
- "Too often it falls to one or two members of staff to push for or lead LGBT+ inclusion, which puts them in a vulnerable position."
- "31% of LGBT+ primary, secondary, and college staff say their colleagues and school board are a barrier to doing LGBT+ inclusion work with their pupils."
"Having either heard homophobic slurs myself when a student walks down the hall or hearing of their existence in our community through LGBTQ+ students, I like to think that I'm able to remain unaffected. I don't know if it's in the moments when I'm most tired or overwhelmed, but I've learned that I'm not unaffected. I hear them and, whether it's an immediate feeling or a delayed one, the comments hurt. I'll keep my chin up, though."
"Time is such a barrier. My school is very academic driven and I feel that anything 'less' academically driven needs to 'prove' its worth."
✅ St. Therese of Lisieux (France)
Jesus has been gracious enough to teach me a lesson about the mystery of the differences in souls, simply by holding up to my eyes the book of nature. I understood how all the flowers God created are beautiful -- how the splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not take away from the perfume of the violet or the simplicity of the daisy. I understood that if all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wildflower.
And so it is in the world of souls … Jesus’ garden. He willed to create great souls comparable to lilies and roses, but he created small ones as well … and these must be content to be daisies or violets destined to give joy to God’s glances, when he looks down at His feet. Perfection consists in doing God’s will … in being what He would have us be.

For LGBTQ+ young persons an affirming symbol can be a lifeline. It communicates "you are precious in my eyes and honored, and I love you" (Isaiah 43:4). The gesture is small, but it increases a young person's sense of value and supports their physical, mental, and spiritual health.
In some places rainbow colors are controversial and beyond the threshold for administrators. That is why the Without Exception logo is designed to be an integrated Catholic symbol. The circle represents the universal (catholic) call to be witnesses to the gospel in all places, “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8); in all times, as symbolized by the colors of the liturgical year; and to all people, as we “look upon our neighbor (without any exception) as another self” (CCC 1931). The heart at the center of the logo is an interpretation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the colors of the liturgical year symbolize glory (gold); Mary and water (blue); blood and fire (red); penance and preparation (purple); life and hope (green); and joy (rose).

Records & Reports
- Just Like Us is a UK-based organization that works with schools to support LGBT+ young people. They have developed a free, short e-learning course for teachers on "Preventing Anti-LGBT+ Bullying in Secondary Schools." The aims for this course are to explore the experiences of LGBT+ young people, particularly their experiences growing up; to discuss approaches for tackling and preventing anti-LGBT+ bullying in schools; and to start creating a plan to apply available tools to your own setting. More information is available here.
- Divine is an LGBTQIA+ youth program sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. Led by Rev. Olivia Hamilton and Mike Johnson, the Divine team also consists of a handful of LGBTQIA+ adult mentors who accompany youth and their parents through the Divine program. In the five-week program, Divine participants gather for dinner, conversation, and support. Youth are paired with LGBTQIA+ adult mentors, and parents/caregivers also have an opportunity to connect with and support one another through guided group conversation. Divine seeks to create a space for LGBTQIA+ youth and their families to explore faith, spirituality, and belief in a brave way, knowing that the whole of who they are is valued and affirmed, including their questions and doubts. Divine is a respectful, inclusive, and empowering space where LGBTQIA+ youth and their families can come together and find support, resources, and spiritual nourishment as they navigate their unique journeys of self-discovery and identity expression. More information about the program is available here on the Divine website.
- The annual Interfaith Weekend Retreat for LGBTQ+ Persons, Allies, and Family Members will be held on the weekend of November 7-9, 2025 at the Feliciana Retreat and Conference Center in Norwood, Louisiana. More information will be forthcoming. If you have any questions, then please contract Brad Leger at brad@balconsulting.org.
