Board Meetings
Board Meetings are the last Thursday of the Month.
The location for meetings for this year will be at Lynda's house or via Zoom.
If you have something that needs to be brought to the attention of the Board, or you would like to discuss the issue in person, please contact a Board Member.
Board Meetings are open to all but only board members can vote at the meetings.
Tidbits from the President
The BIG THING for May is quilt show. It’s still scheduled for the beginning of August but quilt registration closes before the end of May. Look at the quilt show section of the newsletter to get all the details, but as usual, we don’t have NEARLY enough quilts yet. I understand that quilters
are a ‘last minute’ kinda bunch. I am hoping (counting) on many of you finishing up a quilt as we speak, for the show. If you don’t have a new quilt about to be finished, please consider a quilt you already have, made any time in the last 5 years. It doesn’t have to be a perfect quilt, just a beautiful quilt (aren’t they all) that show something interesting. People go to these shows to see WOW and everyone’s version of that is different.
I won’t be at the May meeting since I am still in Austin on grandson duty. But I look forward to seeing all of you in June. I will be watching the program via zoom, so I will be ‘with you’ for that.
Program this Month
David Owen Hastings Lecture: Minimal Design, Maximum Impact
We are excited about our program in May! Please join us either in person or if not able to attend in person, join us on Zoom*.

May 2024 Program - ZOOM & In Person!
Don't Miss this meeting!
Lecture: Minimal Design, Maximum Impact
This talk gives an overview of my process for coming up with simple graphic quilt designs, starting with stitched paper models (called maquettes). I show examples of how to translate an architectural photo into a quilt design, and have many samples of mini quilts I created using this process. The techniques I present are also great for making unique modern quilt block designs. I also talk about walking foot quilting and how to break free from stitch in the ditch.
MAY ZOOM MEETING:
To attend remotely, you will need to download the Zoom app. Get that done ahead of time, so you don't miss any of the meeting.

Mini-quilt Auction
Auction Minis
Please, turn in your donation minis for the auction. They need to have a 2-inch sleeve with some ease. (Start with a 4.5-5 in strip!) They should also have a label with a quilt name, maker’s name, Guild, and credit to the design source if not a personal pattern.
You should also include a copy of the auction acknowledgment you received when you registered it at https://www.sewingexpo.com/Events/Dallas-TX/Mini-Quilt-Auction-Entry-Form-2024.
I am still missing a number of the quilts shown at the February meeting. Please, get them in!
Double-check the acknowledgement email to make sure that your photo uploaded correctly.
PassAround Collage Follow-up
Remember to bring your finished, quilted, zig-zag edged collage to the May meeting. I’ll be stitching them to something to show off as a group. Put your name on the back so that I can return it to you after the Show.
Anyone bringing theirs in will be eligible for a small prize.

Quilt Show Booth News
Just a reminder to turn in something to sell in the booth this year
Try making some of those patterns I gave out at the February meeting. Of course...Anything will be appreciated.
If we do well in the booth - we will have $$ for good programs.
Many thanks!!
Ann Houpt, Booth Manager :)
Raffle Quilt
Raffle Quilt
Let’s keep selling those tickets for our raffle quilt. This is a big fundraiser for us, and we only do it once every two years.
We also need members to volunteer to take the quilt somewhere and sell tickets. This can be another guild, a shop, a retreat. Anywhere you are willing to go. No one wants to do all of this alone but one meeting: one day, maybe with a friend???? Is there another guild you are a member of? Is there a guild you have wanted to visit? This is the way. Ask one of the board members if you don’t know how to contact someone to visit.
Thank you so much to Shelley Clauss who has agreed to handle the logistics for the quilt. So contact Shelley if you would like to take the quilt somewhere and sell tickets.

Hospitality
A lot is happening in May, we have Mayfest, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, graduation, Memorial Day and the end of another school year. Where has the time gone? We have teacher appreciation, be sure to thank all of the teachers. We have teachers in our guild that are retired and teachers that are still in the classroom every day. They are doing a great job teaching our children. I know they go beyond the usual lesson plan.
Thank you to those who helped set up and clean up after the April meeting, I appreciate your help. Bring your favorite snack to the guild meeting for everyone to enjoy. I will bring the tea.

BEES
EMBROIDERY BEE
The Fort Worth Embroidery Bee met on April 25th at 11am. The Subject was Embrilliance Essentials.
Wanda Edmunds was giving a demonstration on Embrilliance Essentials.
All members who had the application on their laptop were encouraged to bring their laptop and follow along with the information that was reviewed so that they could get hands on training.
We reviewed Microsoft Version 10 and 11 to get the necessary background regarding file structure, setting up the hoop size used for the design being edited or built, how to select text and add it to a design being created. Where to find answers to questions that a member may need to know.
Suggestions were made on what to do for the May meeting and the decision was made to create keyfobs. Wanda sent out a ITH Inch Key Fob found under
https://www.beyondtheframeembroidery.com/ Free membership can be created to access a free project every month.
There can also be found by googling, free ITH keyfob outlines different lengths and widths. These can be brought into Embrilliance Essentials and personalized keyfobs can be created and saved to be used as gifts, etc.
The Bee is open to any member that wants to join. Presently we have 5-6 members participating and have not met our highest member count.
You can contact Wanda Edmunds or Sarah Tutt for more information.
FRAYED KNOTS
We meet on the second Tuesday evening of the month at Jonquele's.
TIGHT KNOTS -- April and May Meetings
Tight Knots April Meeting
Barbara Hughes hosted our meeting this month. As always there was lots of talk about our health and dogs-- then down to business. Grace started us off with a gift of black gold needles. These are designed to sew Batik bindings. She also gave out some patterns for some pillows she thought others might be interested in. They went fast. Margo Grunseich opened up show and tell with a wall quilt of a coyote she is working on and a pillowcase she made for Safe Haven. Pat Wagers shared some pretty cross stitch. Peggie Herring showed a really fun under the sea quilt. Barbara Hughes presented a quilt she was making with squares from random strips. It was very colorful. Cheri Bigham had two donation quilts to show us. Our host had lots of fun snacks and a wonderful poundcake to share with us. Then Judi Janes preceded to take all our fat quarters in a game of left right center. A good time was had by all. Thanks Barbara, for hosting this month.
P. Ford
The Tight Knots bee met at the home of Carolyn Hughes on May 1. We missed four of our members, so were a smaller group than usual. Cecilia started off Show and Tell with an appliquéd quilt she had echo quilted for a customer. Then she showed a quilt she is working on, made from a panel of old fashioned paper dolls. Margo brought along the paper pieced quilt with a farm scene that she is making for her grandson. Peggie showed off a paper pieced mini quilt from a subscription series she has been doing. It had four flowers in various pink shades, and will be for her daughter on Mother's Day. Grace showed the bag she started at the guild retreat and finished at home as well as a Quilts of Valor flimsy that she sent home with Cecilia to be quilted. We celebrated Cecilia’s May birthday by gifting her with half yards of Kaffe Fassett fabric—a veritable rainbow! Carolyn served lemon blueberry Bundt cake, and then we played Left-Right-Center to win blue fat quarters. Judi Janes won the game, in absentia, for the second month in a row. —submitted by Grace Stroud
Start a BEE
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.
Retreat 2024
Join your quilt sisters at the 2024 Guild Retreat!
From all reports, a good time was had by all.
Bev Ramsey Fund
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
Quilts of Valor
Quilts of Valor
Thanks to all the members who have been sewing blocks and entire quilt tops and sewing binding on some of the quilts. All your continued help is greatly appreciated.
Please bring any blocks you have completed to the next meeting. There are a couple of quilt kits that were picked up at the February meeting that need to be turned in. We have backing fabric for them, and I will be happy to quilt them or find another volunteer to do the quilting.
Just a reminder: Recommended size for QOV’s 60”x80” (minimum:55”x65”; maximum: 72”x90”)
Thanks again
for all your hard work!

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.
JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)
NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts
One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

Help your Newsletter Editors !!!
After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text or JPGPNG pictures. We can attach pdf documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device in order to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files which contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but some of the formatting may be lost.
