5 Things to Know Weekly Update
June 22, 2026
Dear Colleagues:
We’ve reminded everyone several times about the Kickoff event for our 60th Anniversary tomorrow from 4-6 p.m., and even if you can’t be there, I hope you take a minute to think about everything GWC has been for students for six decades – and how much more we can do in the future. Most of us hear from community members all the time about their time at GWC, always in a positive way. And it sometimes seems that everyone in Orange County learned to swim here! As we go through the year with more events, participate when you can and have pride in what we continue to do here!
Below are upcoming events planned for the summer and fall, along with a link to the complete 60th Anniversary calendar.

We were contacted last week by the state Chancellor’s Office to see if we would host some members of the Board of Governors on August 26. Of course we said yes – it’s a great opportunity to show off the College and also learn what the BOG plans for the year ahead. More information to come as we prepare to showcase GWC. 😊
SOMOS Summer Book Club starts tomorrow (6/23). This year’s selection is Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora, which tells the story of the author’s journey from El Salvador to the United States as a child. I suspect this book will spark some meaningful conversations about family, resilience, and the pursuit of opportunity. Discussions will take place throughout the summer during employees’ regularly scheduled lunch hours.
There are still a few free copies of the book available for anyone who wants to join. Contact Diana Retes at dretes@gwc.cccd.edu with any questions.
The Pride Picnic last week was a lot of fun, for both students and staff. Thanks to everyone involved for ensuring that we celebrate Pride Month and reinforce belonging for our students and staff.
You can view photos of the event on the GWC Gallery.
I will be out after Wednesday this week, seeing my granddaughter Lorelai in North Carolina and celebrating my 65th birthday in Omaha (long story). Have a wonderful week and a joyful 4th of July, and I’ll see everyone on July 6.
