Happy Friday Panther families! We had a great first week of school at DKMS!

Next week Tuesday 9/9 and Thursday 9/11 we will be having our first round of district testing. This year instead of using the NWEA assessment, we will be using the STAR Assessment. It is similar to the NWEA assessment, but a huge advantage for us is that the STAR assessment's data feeds directly into FRECKLE, which is a program we use for interventions and enrichments. We will begin testing around 9:45 am on both days and should be done before 11:00 am. Please make sure your child:

  1. Has a good night's rest
  2. Comes to school in time for testing
  3. Eats breakfast

This summer our district staff had Capturing Kids' Hearts (CKH) training and we are implementing that program within our schools. Some CKH things that we are already doing in the middle school are:

  1. Hand Signals: Timeout (to get a group's attention), Check (to help others meet expectations), and Foul (when someone has said something hurtful).
  2. Starting each class with sharing Good Things (a few people sharing something good happening in their life and being celebrated for sharing).
  3. Social Contracts created by the students and teachers in each class.
  4. CKH behavior questions for students when they are not meeting the classroom expectations.
As a staff we are truly excited about CKH, because the school-wide use of common language, signals, and relationship building helps create a better learning environment.

A quick reminder that we have a "no cell phones" during school policy. This means from when the student enters the building until 2:50 pm, we should not see or hear any cell phones. If a student has their phone out or it begins to make noises we will take the phone and hold it in the office. For the first offense we will hold the phone in the office and return it to the student at the end of the day. On the second offense we will hold the phone in the office until a parent/guardian picks it up. On the third offense we will hold the phone in the office until a parent/guardian picks it up. Also, on the third offense students will be put on a cell phone contract where they agree to drop their cell phone off in the office at the beginning of every school day and pick it up at the end of the day. If you have questions about our cell phone policy please reach out to me via email at bobby.tillman@dkschools.org or by calling my office at (269) 623-1544.

As always. I would like to thank our students, staff, families, and community for a great start to the 2025/2026 school year! The school year is a marathon, but it is always a good idea to get off to a great start and we are doing that here at DKMS. We look forward to working with your child this year. Have a great weekend!

It's a great day to be a PANTHER!!!

On Friday, September 12, students are invited to wear their Caleb’s Comeback t-shirts to show support for 6th grader Caleb Poirier.

His strength, courage, and determination have been an inspiration to our school community.

To show our support, we’ll be taking a group photo near the end of the day for any students who wear their t-shirt and would like to participate.

This is a special way for us to stand together and celebrate Caleb’s comeback journey.

Weekend Food Help for Students – Hand2Hand Program Weekend Food Help for Students – Hand2Hand Program

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map Show in original size

We would like to offer your student the opportunity to participate in a program called "Hand2Hand". This program helps provide a student with food for the weekends and is intended for families who currently may be experiencing a financial burden.

Here's how it works: At the end of each week, students who are signed up for Hand2Hand will receive a minimum of 10 food items in a bag. These food items will be a combination of breakfast, snacks, and lunch or dinner items. There is no cost to participate! If you sign your student up to receive Hand2Hand, they will continue to receive the weekend bag of food each week throughout the school year. Bags will be discreetly delivered to your child at school.

If you feel like your child would benefit from this opportunity, please complete the form. (You will need to complete one form for each of your children.) If there comes a point when you no longer need the assistance, alert your school office. It will take at least two weeks to receive your first bag. If you do not receive a bag, please contact your school office.

(Please note: if your student or another family member has food allergies, it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the contents of the bag each week to ensure the food doesn't contain ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction).

Bringing Medication to School? Read This First Bringing Medication to School? Read This First

Hello DK Families,

Welcome back to school! There are important updates for students taking medication at school. A new medication policy went into place in July 2025. The biggest change impacting your middle school student is around emergency medications, such inhalers and EpiPens. If your student needs to carry their inhaler or Epi-Pen, it is required to have the parent and the physician give written permission by checking the box on the medication form. Another option, especially for young students, is to keep the emergency medication in the office. It is important to remember all medications used at school will require a medication administration form completed by the health prescriber (linked below).

Medication Authorization Form

This form requires parent signature and student physician's signature, along with dosage and administration instructions. New forms must be completed every year. Any medication must be brought to the school office by an adult and in the original bottle or container.

Please be sure to accurately fill out the new or returning student registration for your child/children, including any medical concerns, updated contact information, and updated physician information. This is important for the first day of school to be safe for your child when they arrive.

Below you will find a list of school needs for some of the most common health conditions:

Any Medications Taken During School Hours:

  • Medication in the original bottle/prescription bottle.

  • Signed Medication Consent Form

    • All Prescription Medications must have a physician’s and parent signature

    • Self-Carry Medications

      • Allowed to self carry medications per district policy are emergency medications such as inhalers or EPI Pens and permission from both the parent and physician must be marked on prescription medication form.

Severe Allergies:

  • EPI Pen and/or Benadryl with Medication Consent Forms

  • Allergy Action Plan

Asthma:

  • Inhaler with Medication Const Form

  • Asthma Action Plan from the physician

Seizures

  • Emergency Seizure medications with medication consent form

  • Seizure Action plan from physician

Other Life Threatening medical conditions (example: Bleeding disorders)
