Happy Monday MES Families!

This month, our character value is being TRUSTWORTHY! We have continued our conversations in classrooms, and have done activities with our buddy classes regarding it! Keep those conversations going at home about being trustworthy!

October is also safety month! We will be reinforcing this through our drills. Each month, we do a fire (evacuation) drill, and this month, we will also be practicing an earthquake drill, which we do 3x each year. Because I am off site on the day of the California Shakeout, we are moving our earthquake drill to later in the month. We will not only practice dropping, covering, and holding on, but will also evacuate and give our staff an opportunity to practice their roles during a full scale emergency.

Exciting news is here for MES! We have a new Marine Science teacher! Mr. Iain Tyson will be starting to get himself set up this week, and will start to work with all of our students NEXT week! I'm having him connect with 2 of our former marine science educators so that our program stays smooth with the transition! Watch for more details NEXT week! If you have a child in Mrs. Kooy's 5th grade class, ask them about him! They enjoyed a model lesson that he gave as part of his interview process!

Please remember that School starts at 8:15! We continue to have LOTS of students arriving after this time! Work together as a family in the morning to have your child arrive on time in the morning, ready for instruction! Mrs. Calvert and I are out in the morning and we have noticed that there is a huge gap in traffic around 8:05, so arriving a bit earlier makes that car lane even better as well! We can do it Sea Lions!

Here's to a wonderful week ahead!

A Note from Malibu Education Foundation:

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the MEF Gala! Together, we raised $150,000 for our schools and had an incredible night with our Malibu community! See our impact report and photo gallery at MalibuEducationFoundation.org/gala.

If you haven't donated yet, our community ask is $750 per student to help fund staff and staffed programs across all four Malibu public schools - including instructional aides, arts, athletics, and academic support. Every gift makes a difference and complements the work of our school PTA.

We also need volunteer help! Malibu Moves is coming up Sat-Sun, October 25-26 at Zuma Beach and we are looking for volunteers! Just a few hours at the beach helps provide our students with math tutors, instructional aides, and more!

Student Birthday Parties (from the Parent Handbook)

Such observances must be coordinated with the classroom teacher and should occur after lunch or at the end of the day. Food may be distributed at school. Healthier options should be encouraged. Cakes or very sweet treats (Sugar-based foods) are NOT allowed. All-natural popsicles are the ONLY choice for birthday celebrations. Our SMMUSD Food and Nutrition Services Wellness Policy calls for staff to limit student consumption of sugar at school. No nuts, if there is a peanut allergy in the classroom. Party favors are ok to distribute. Birthday invitations for parties away from school may not be distributed unless every student in the class is invited.
