Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala

As we head into Finals Week, this is the time for our students to lock in and finish strong. Every assignment they turn in, every exam they study for, every minute they stay focused in class, it all matters. Our expectations at Smoky Hill aren’t about making things harder for our students; they’re about helping them grow, reach their potential, and open doors for their future.

With the holiday break right around the corner, now is the moment for our students to push themselves just a little more. Remember, how they finish this semester sets the tone for next semester and beyond. We want our students to show themselves, their classmates, their teachers, and their loved ones what it means to be a Smoky Hill Buffalo: resilient, focused, and committed to excellence.

Let’s make this last week our best week. Finish strong, Buffs!

Changes to After-School Student Pickup in Semester 2

Smoky Hill High School Community,

I’m writing to share an important update regarding after-school student pickup at Smoky Hill High School.

Beginning Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the north parking lot (located on E. Smoky Hill Rd.) will no longer be accessible for after-school student pickup. To ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process, all after-school student pickup will take place in the south parking lot (located on E. Buffalo Way) starting on that date.

We appreciate your partnership as we make this adjustment. Shifting pickup to one designated area will help us improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support a smoother, safer experience for students, families, and staff.

Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility. We are grateful for your continued support as we work to keep our campus operations running safely and smoothly.

Warm regards,

Dr. Andre Bala

Principal, Smoky Hill High School

Final exams allow students to demonstrate what they’ve learned and to finalize their grades; they also reinforce a culture of academic excellence by setting high expectations, honoring sustained effort, and emphasizing true mastery of course content. To reinforce this belief, all teachers are expected to provide students with a final exam, culminating activity, or in class presentation on their designated exam day. In turn, students are expected to attend and participate in final exams. In the instance a student misses an exam/s, the Student Make-up/Late Work Policy applies, and if eligible based on that policy, would be able to make up the exam during the remainder of finals week or when school resumes after the winter break.

SMOKY HILL HIGH SCHOOL CONCURRENT & DUAL ENROLLMENT 2026-2027

Concurrent Enrollment: Earn high school credit and college credit at the same time. Courses are offered through local community colleges and taught at CCSD high schools by accredited, post-secondary teachers. Courses are free if the student completes the required paperwork including Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF) and meets the prerequisites.

Dual Enrollment: Similar to Concurrent Enrollment. Families incur a small tuition cost to enroll. Courses offered through Metro State University of Denver and taught at CCSD high schools.

open_in_new zoom_out_map

Some courses have prerequisites that must be met in order to enroll in class and be eligible to earn college credit. Student must do the following to earn college credit:

  • Satisfy prerequisites
  • Complete Student/ Parent Agreement
  • Apply to the college
  • Get a C or higher
  • Be enrolled the entire term

For the course to be tuition free, the student must apply for COF (College Opportunity Fund) during the college application process.

Weighting of Concurrent Enrollment (CE) and Dual Enrollment (DE)

We are writing to share important information about Cherry Creek School District (CCSD) Concurrent Enrollment (CE) and Dual Enrollment (DE) courses. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, particular CE and DE courses will be weighted in Grade Point Average (GPA) calculations. Please note that this change is not retroactive and will apply only to courses taken in the 2026–2027 school year and beyond.

To be eligible for weighted GPA credit, CE and DE courses must meet two of the following three criteria:

  • The course has a college readiness and/or college prerequisite as defined by the partnering postsecondary institution
  • The course is a CCSD defined core academic class
  • The course is a Guaranteed Transfer (GT) course as defined by the Colorado Department of Higher Education

This shift aligns CCSD with practices across other Denver Metro area school districts. It also reflects our district's ongoing commitment to ensuring that students have equitable opportunities as they pursue their pathway of purpose.

As always, we encourage students to work closely with their school counselor, current teachers, and families when selecting their high school courses. Course choices should support each student’s individual postsecondary goals whether that means earning a certificate, entering the workforce, attending college, joining the military, or exploring another pathway.

To help families and students make informed decisions, we recommend:

  • Attend scheduled registration information meetings with your school counselor and teachers during registration time.
  • Review your high school's current course guide and the CE and DE offerings that are available.
  • Talk with teachers about how specific classes may support student interests and strengths.
  • Exploring CCSD’s college and career readiness resources
  • Examine Colorado’s Guaranteed Transfer course list

We are excited to continue supporting students as they discover and pursue their unique paths. Thank you for partnering with us in this vital work. For questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact Mr. Chris Ritchie, CE Coordinator at 720-886-5491 or critchie@cherrycreekschools.org.

From The Athletic Director, Mr. David Benedict From The Athletic Director, Mr. David Benedict

Dear Smoky Hill families and community partners,

I want to share an important update regarding our swimming pool facility.

Recently, we identified a significant issue that has caused the pool to lose an estimated 20,000–30,000 gallons of water per day. This level of loss is not only unsustainable but also raises safety and operational concerns, requiring us to close the pool while further diagnostics and repairs are conducted. We are working closely with Cherry Creek School District operations staff, and their partnership and expertise have been instrumental as we assess the situation and determine next steps. Throughout this process, the flexibility and patience shown by so many members of our community have been remarkable. Our students and teachers have adjusted to relocated classes and temporary space changes with positivity and resilience.

We also recognize the inconvenience this has caused for our community renters and outside groups who rely on our pool as a training and gathering space, and we deeply appreciate their understanding and willingness to adjust. Our girls’ swim and dive team has handled this transition with exceptional character. Between new practice schedules, changing facilities, and unexpected travel, they have continued to represent Smoky Hill with pride and determination. We are also incredibly grateful to our neighboring Cherry Creek schools, who have stepped forward to share

their pool space, ensuring our athletes can practice and compete during this disruption.

As we move forward, we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and timelines become clearer. Our commitment remains the same: to prioritize safety, communicate openly, and ensure a long-term solution that supports our students, athletes, families, and community partners.

Thank you for your continued grace, patience, and support during this time.

With appreciation,

David Benedict | Athletic Director

Girls Basketball: A new bar has been set with our girls basketball team. A team that went 5-18 last season, has started with a 4-0 record including a 1 place finish at last weekend’s Palmer Invitational in part thanks to Arie Boyd dropping 30pts against Grand Junction. Smoky Hill Buffs Pantry

What is Buff's Pantry?

As a class, we have aimed to make a difference in our Smoky Hill community, and we decided to do this by creating a safe space where students can receive the food and hygiene products they need on a weekly basis. We offer multiple types of food, whether it’s canned/boxed or just quick snacks, hygiene products, baby products (diapers/wipes), and clothes/shoes. We receive donations from SECOR, the local community, students, and our CCSD district Food Pantry Liaisons. Last year, we were able to serve 70 families in total. Our goal is to limit food insecurity and strengthen our school holistically.

How it runs:

Weekly, as students scan the QR codes that are placed in every classroom and around the school and we receive orders in the Google Form, Call 2 Action students will create individualized bags for each student. They will then deliver them to the counseling office. Students will be called to the counseling office to pick up their bags. Our hope is to reduce any shame that comes with needing support by keeping this process as anonymous as possible.

Here is the Buff's Pantry Google form link for you to fill out with your needs:
