Happy Friday DKMS Panther Families! It was another great week in the middle school!
Thank you to all of the families that attended Parent/Teacher conferences on Tuesday night. It's always great to be able to communicate with you about your child's academic, social, and behavioral progress.
If you were not able to attend this past Tuesday, we will have conferences again Tuesday October 21, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. If you have not signed up yet, here are the teacher sign up links:
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCE SIGN UP
The end of the first quarter will be Friday October 24, 2025. This means students will have 1 more week of their Q1 RASL class and their grades will be closing next Friday. It is important that students look at their grades in PowerSchool and talk with their teachers about which assignments can still be turned in and other ways they can finish the first quarter strong. We will have Success Center Thursday October 23, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Success Center is an awesome time for students to complete homework, missing assignments, summative assignment retakes, and get some tutoring. Students need to be picked up at 4:00 pm if they stay for Success Center.
As always, I would like to thank our students, staff, families, and community for all of their hard work and support. It seems like we were just starting school and celebrating homecoming. We have completed 7 weeks of school and are finishing up our first quarter! I guess time really does fly when you're having fun ! Have a great weekend!
It's a great day to be a PANTHER!

Channeling Archimedes: The Crown and Water Displacement
Mrs. Estep’s science classes have been exploring the structures and properties of matter by investigating different ways to measure volume. Students conducted a popcorn experiment to see if containers of different shapes could hold the same volume. They also learned about Archimedes, the scientist who used water displacement to determine the volume of the King’s crown. Building on this idea, students discussed how matter takes up space and practiced measuring the volume of irregularly shaped objects using water displacement. In this activity, they measured the volume of a golf ball by observing how much the water level rose when it was submerged. Next, students will continue their investigations by testing additional objects and recording their water displacement results.
Hands-On Learning at STARBASE Battle Creek
Our 5th graders are participating in STARBASE Battle Creek, a hands-on program that explores science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
Students are divided into two groups. This past Monday, Mr. Fawcett’s group attended and learned about energy and programming robots to move. Next week, Mr. Carlson and Mrs. Estep will begin taking their group.
Throughout the five-week program, students will participate in hands-on activities that bring STEM subjects to life in a fun and exciting way.
7th Graders Master Oil Pastels
Seventh-grade students in Mr. Gailey’s art class just finished their oil pastel pictures. They learned how to blend colors and use shading to make their artwork stand out. The finished projects turned out amazing!
Keeping the Beat
Last Friday night, 8th grader Jack Hanson proudly represented our middle school as he played drums with the high school marching band during the football game. Jack and Isabella Brown are the only students from Mrs. Knight’s band class who participate in the marching band alongside the high school musicians.

Never Forget: Poems from 7th Grade
Although September 11 has passed, our 7th grade students wrote poems to honor and remember the day. Some students wanted to share their work, and we’ll be featuring those poems each week in the newsletter. These poems were created in Mrs. Ferguson’s and Mrs. Podolan’s classes. We look forward to sharing a few each week until all have been shared with our school community.
If only I could feel the pain of my mom
Tears fill my eyes
If only I weren’t just sitting here in silence
I could be out there with her
If only she were squeezing me tight
If only my mom were not in the towers when it got hit
If only the world could change
If only they could find her in the towers
Only if I could squeeze her tight one more time
Only if she didn’t get her job
We would be together forever!
I will never forget this day
911 poem
If only the tower had not fallen down
If only the airplane had not hit the towers
If only the airplane had not been hijacked
If only they all did not lose their family
If only the smoke did not blow

If Only…
The first tower fell,
I watched in despair,
As emergency responders ran to help.
People were screaming, crying,
Dying.
If only this hadn’t happened.
The second tower fell,
Two more plane crashes,
One hit the pentagon,
The other crashed in a field.
So many dead, so little time to even think.
If only someone could’ve stopped these tragedies.
Now the people who died,
They are remembered in stone.
First responders, military personnel, and civilians,
All these people died on one fateful day.
Why would anyone cause so much death?
If only we could reverse time.
