The Washington Wire
August Edition

Principal Message
Washington Families,
As we welcome the month of October and the arrival of cooler weather, I want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support of Washington Elementary. It’s hard to believe that our first quarter is coming to an end on Thursday, October 8th! With the end of the quarter, students will have no school on Friday, October 9th, as our staff prepares for parent-teacher conferences the following week.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held October 12th–14th. Teachers have communicated with families regarding their scheduled conference times and whether the meeting will be held in person or online. If you are unable to attend your scheduled time, please reach out to your child’s teacher to make alternative arrangements. During conference week, students will have a half day on Wednesday, October 14th, with dismissal at 12:10 p.m. There will be no school on Thursday, October 15th, and Friday, October 16th.
As we look ahead to the rest of October, we have several exciting events planned! We will be hosting our first-ever Multicultural Night at Washington on Thursday, October 22nd. More details will be coming soon, but please take a look at the PTO flyer below for more information. We will also celebrate Red Ribbon Week, promoting healthy, drug-free choices through fun and engaging activities the week of October 26th-30th, along with a staff and student spirit week. To close out the month, we will have our K-5th grade classroom Fall Parties on Friday, October 30th, beginning at 3:00 p.m. More information about these events will be shared as the dates approach.
Thank you. We hope you will be able to join us for these fun fall events!

Responsible, Respectful, and Safe
Effective Redirection
At Washington, our expectations are taught, modeled and practiced every day. We want our students to understand what a safe, responsible, and respectful student looks like in every setting throughout our school.
This month, we want to highlight how we use effective redirection and ways you can support it at home. When redirecting students from off-task or unwanted behavior, we often use two simple strategies: First…Then and Stop…Start.
First…Then helps students understand what needs to happen first:
- First finish your homework, then you can play.
- First clean up your toys, then you can watch your show.
- First use a calm voice, then we can talk.
Stop…Start tells students what behavior to stop and what to do instead:
- Stop running. Start walking.
- Stop calling out. Start raising your hand.
- Stop using unkind words. Start using respectful words.
At home, try keeping redirections short, clear, and positive by focusing on what you want your child to do next. Thank you for partnering with us to help our Washington Champions make safe, responsible, and respectful choices every day.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
Our next PTO meeting is Monday, October 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the Washington Elementary library.
This month, PTO is gearing up for our Multicultural Night: WA Around the World on Thursday, October 22nd from 6:00–8:00 p.m. If you are interested in helping with this exciting event, please email TheWashPTO@gmail.com.
If you are assigned to be a room parent, please reach out to your teacher to help organize our upcoming Fall Party on Friday, October 30th. We are always looking for volunteers to help with games, provide snacks, and support classrooms as we celebrate the fall season!
Interested in being a room parent or helping with a classroom party? Please email TheWashPTO@gmail.com.
Red Ribbon Week
Make A Difference, Be A Hero. Stay Drug Free
We had a great turnout for our Walk-a-Thon, and our Washington Champions worked hard to help us reach one of our building incentives! Because of their efforts, students earned a Spirit Week!
We are excited to combine our Spirit Week with this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme: Make a Difference, Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free. Throughout the week, students will participate in fun activities that promote healthy choices, positive decision-making, and a drug-free lifestyle.
Classroom Fall Parties: Friday, October 30th
Spirit Week: Costume Guidelines
Friday, October 30th, students will be wearing costumes to school for Red Ribbon Week and our Fall parties. Please remember that costumes must be school appropriate which means no real or fake weapons, blood, or other inappropriate images. Also, any headgear/mask that covers the face should remain off. We also recommend that you limit face paint, as we know this can get messy and become uncomfortable throughout the day.
Friday will be a normal school day, so it is important your student(s) feel comfortable while learning in their costume for an extended time. Also, we want to be sure that students can successfully use the restroom while here, so please plan accordingly. Parents or guardians are welcome to attend the classroom parties. We will start the festivities at 3:00pm to the end of the school day.
