Dear DCES Parents,

We Survived Week One! 🎉

What a week! We have officially wrapped up our first full week of school, and the energy on campus is amazing. Whether your child is getting back into the groove or experiencing school routines for the very first time, our Deer Canyon students are settling in like pros.

Passport to Success ✈️

Our students kicked off the week with a mini-adventure! Every child received a special passport and took a tour around campus, stopping at key spots to learn about school expectations with our amazing staff.

The 3 R’s in Action 🌟

While we loved exploring, our core values haven't changed. This week, I visited every classroom to chat with students about our 3 R’s and what they mean in everyday life:

• Respect Yourself: We all make mistakes—it’s how we learn! We talked about using positive self-talk, dusting ourselves off, and bringing a growth mindset to every challenge.
• Respect Others: Treating people the way we want to be treated, celebrating our differences, and listening to new ideas.
• Respect the Environment: Taking pride in our campus by keeping restrooms clean, picking up trash, and caring for our equipment.

Connecting with Our Deer Canyon Family ❤️

These classroom visits gave me a chance to get to know the students better and share a little about myself. They learned my absolute favorite things: my family, the beach, and getting to spend my days with each of them here at school!

Keep the Magic Going at Home 💬

Over dinner, on the walk home, or before bed, ask your child about the 3 R's and their passport tour. Continuing these conversations at home makes a huge difference in reinforcing what we learn at school.

Have a wonderful weekend! Take time to relax, read a book together, play outside, and soak up these last few weeks of summer. See you Monday!

Want to volunteer at Deer Canyon this school year? We’re excited to welcome our volunteers back!

Before applying, please note these important updates:

✅New Application: All volunteers, both new and returning, must complete the 2026–2027 Volunteer Application.

✅Photo ID Required: Please upload a current government-issued photo ID. Military IDs are not accepted. The name on your application must match your ID exactly.

✅TB Clearance: A completed California School Employee TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire is required.

✅Level 1 Volunteers: AB 1913 training must be completed within 90 days of applying, and the certificate must be uploaded to your application. Please see the 2026–2027 Volunteer Information Sheet for information about completing this training.

Please Be Patient! Volunteer applications will be processed as we establish our school routines and procedures. We will do our best to have your application reviewed and approved within 5 business days.

For the 2026–2027 school year, with the support of the Deer Canyon PSO, we are excited to invite any grade level to join the Chess Club. Members will meet weekly to play chess and learn strategy.

Is your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader always asking "why," building wild creations, or fascinated by how the world works? We are thrilled to announce the launch of Science Olympiad (Division A) at Deer Canyon for the 2026–2027 school year!

Science Olympiad is a fun, hands-on STEM program where students work in collaborative pairs to solve mysteries, test lab experiments, and engineer dynamic builds. It’s an incredible, high-energy way for students to build confidence, make friends, and spark a lifelong love for science and engineering!

Quick Program Highlights:

Who Can Join: Open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.

What They'll Do: Explore 2 to 3 events tailored to their interests (engineering builds, biology, physics, earth science, or inquiry challenges).

The Goal: Team building, weekly hands-on practice, and representing our school at the regional tournament in the spring (subject to a selection process)!

Calling all 2nd - 5th graders who love to sing!

Our Deer Canyon Choir will be starting rehearsals, Tuesday September 15 at 8:00am. We meet weekly on Tuesday mornings and perform at events throughout the school year. This is a free program sponsored by the PSO and directed by Angie Serrano.

Mark your calendars - Friday, Oct 9th, 5:00 - 7:30pm

Each year, DC students and families get to “take a trip around the world” in one night here at the Deer Canyon MPR.

DC families set up tables with information about their country’s heritage, artifacts, and food samples.

There are also multicultural performances and kids’ fashion shows to enjoy. It’s a great way to celebrate and learn about the rich cultural tapestry here at Deer Canyon.

This is a FREE event for our families, but we need your help.

We are looking for:

- Families to help host tables

- Students to represent their respective country for fashion show and performance

- 5th graders to emcee the event

- Committee members to help coordinate fashion show & performances
