Member Spotlight
This month, we are proud to highlight Katie Murray McDevitt, a lifelong member whose roots run deep in the life and ministry of our church. Katie grew up here, actively involved in the youth program where she built lasting friendships and a strong foundation of faith that continues to guide her today.
Now, it is a joy to see that same spirit carried forward through her family, as her two sons (Brady and Miles) are actively involved in our youth group. Katie is married to Johnathan McDevitt, who teaches and coaches at Madison Middle School. Watching generations grow in faith together is a powerful testament to the strength and continuity of our church family.
Katie’s commitment to service is evident in her leadership roles. She currently serves as a deacon and faithfully fulfills her responsibilities as secretary of the Board of Deacons. Her dedication, organization, and servant’s heart make a meaningful impact on the life of our church. You will also find Katie working with the youth each summer during Bible School in the recreation rotation.
Her family’s legacy is one of deep faith, service, and leadership, spanning many years within our congregation. Katie continues to honor that legacy while also creating her own, through both her service and the example she sets for others.
Beyond the church, Katie serves the community as a counselor at Mars Hill Elementary School, where she supports and encourages students each day. Her work reflects the same compassion and care that she brings to her church family.
We are grateful for Katie’s continued dedication, her servant leadership, and the example she sets for all of us. She is truly a blessing to our church and community.
From Mars Hill University
Tracy Parkinson Named President of Mars Hill University
The Mars Hill University Board of Trustees announced Tracy Parkinson, Ph.D., as the university's next president, following a national search led by Buffkin Baker Executive Search. He will succeed President Tony Floyd, who is retiring at the conclusion of this academic year.
Parkinson came to Mars Hill in 2020 as provost and in 2022 was promoted to executive vice president and provost. He oversees academic affairs, accreditation, emergency management, enrollment management, financial aid, grants, and marketing and communications. He represents the university on county, regional, and national boards. His service includes the Council of Independent Colleges, the Appalachian College Association, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC), and the Land of Sky P20 Council.
Easter Egg Fun
In our tradition to spread a little extra joy this week, the MHU Bonner Scholars will be hiding Easter eggs all around the church lawn on Thursday night. Then, during First Friday, families and children are invited to join the fun and search for eggs hidden all around! Each egg has a prize!
Bring the kids, enjoy the evening, and see how many eggs you can find. It’s a great way to celebrate the season and be part of a fun tradition!
Easter Sunrise Service
Calvary Baptist Church will be having a Sunrise Service on April 5 at 7:00 am. Rev. Jim McCoy will be the speaker. There will be a free breakfast served following the service. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Easter Cross
During Sunday School, our youth will be decorating the Easter cross, a beautiful tradition that symbolizes new life and hope. We invite everyone to be a part of it by bringing fresh flowers with you that morning. Please have your flowers at the church by 10:15 AM so they can be included.
After the service, take a moment to capture the beauty by snapping a family photo in front of the finished cross. It’s a meaningful way to remember this special celebration together!
Opera Performance
Our own Alex Cutliff will have the leading role in an Opera Performance at Mars Hill University on April 10-11 at 7:30 pm. Alex is a member of the Chancel Choir here at church. All are invited to attend.
Summer Youth Camps
We will be participating in two Summer Youth Camps this summer: Passport and UniDiversity. Passport is for elementary and intermediate students, UniDiversity is for middle and high schoolers.
- If your child would like to know more, or sign up for Passport, please contact Erin Spence at 828-713-4835.
- If your child would like to know more, or sign for UniDiversity, please contact Nicholas Honeycutt at 828-778-5149.
MHU Student Breakfast Night
In January, our church had an amazing time hosting Waffle Night for Mars Hill University students! We were grateful to welcome and serve over 50 college students with a full spread of waffles and all the toppings, along with eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit. The room was full of laughter, great conversation, and plenty of energy—especially when everyone began dancing to the YMCA! It was a joyful evening of food, fellowship, and connection, and we loved spending time building community with the Mars Hill University students.
We plan on doing it again on Friday, April 17th, beginning at 6 PM. You are invited to join the fun!

Spring Message - A Season of Renewal
As the earth awakens from the stillness of winter, spring reminds us of God’s beautiful promise of renewal. Budding trees, blooming flowers, and longer days all testify that life is returning once again. In the same way, God is always at work renewing our hearts, restoring our hope, and calling us into new life through Christ.
No matter what season we’ve walked through—whether it’s been a time of struggle, waiting, or growth—spring assures us that change is possible. Just as the barren ground doesn’t stay lifeless forever, neither do our souls remain unchanged in God’s care. He is always doing a new thing in us (Isaiah 43:19).
This month, may we open our hearts to the fresh work God wants to do in our lives. Let go of what has passed, and step into the newness He is offering. Just as creation responds to the Creator, may we also rise, grow, and flourish in His love.
Key Scripture:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
Reflection: Spring is a living illustration of this verse. In Christ, we are not simply improved—we are made new. Old habits, past mistakes, and spiritual dryness do not define us anymore. God offers us a fresh start through His grace.
Study Thoughts:
- What “old things” might God be asking you to release this season?
- Where do you see signs of new growth in your spiritual life?
- How can you intentionally nurture your relationship with God this spring?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for being a God of renewal. As the earth comes alive this spring, awaken my heart to Your presence. Help me to let go of the past and embrace the new life You offer through Jesus. Grow my faith, restore my joy, and guide me in Your truth. Amen.
