A Message from our Principal, Mrs. Mitchell
For this week’s newsletter, I wanted to give families a peek into the learning that’s happening in a variety of classrooms & learning spaces. As I am in and out of classrooms throughout the week, I am constantly in awe of how hard our staff works to make learning engaging for students, while still trying to meet a variety of needs. Hopefully you can see that below!
3rd Graders in Mrs. Slezak’s DLI class learned about different types of “hooks” in writing. Mrs. Slezak did this by showing a video, having students read excerpts from familiar text, and a kinesthetic activity where students moved around the room to identify the type of hook used. Here, they’re practicing adding a “hook” to their own personal narratives.
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Seifert’s DLI class broke words into syllables as they spelled them on their whiteboards during phonics. Students then worked with a partner to orally use the words in a sentence. Prior to these activities, they had some direct instruction from Mrs. Seifert and did some body movement videos using the phonics skill they were learning.
First graders in Mrs. Tipton’s class get a choice during a portion of their reading block each day. This group chose to listen to a story by one of our wonderful IAs. Other ways to engage in text are: reading to self, reading with a partner or listening to an audio story.
During our assembly this week, not only did we recognize some incredible students for perseverance last month, many staff members played a human version of Hungry, Hungry Hippo! As usual, there was a lot of excitement from the kids as they cheered on their favorite group. This was a prize that students earned from the Canned Food Drive in December.
4th Graders are learning the fundamentals of pickleball this week in PE! During several classes, they have practiced the skills needed, and today they got to start putting them to the test at the net. Our PE team is doing an incredible job of skill building across the grades for a variety of sports & activities! A huge thank you to PAC for the grant that funded our entire pickleball unit!
