ConneCTEd | April 2026
Wildcat Families:
As April wraps up, we’re heading into one of the most exciting stretches of the school year. This edition highlights a wide range of stories from the past month—spanning early childhood through alumni—and the collaboration, creativity and achievement happening across Elgin ISD's Career & Technical Education programs.
Looking ahead, May promises a strong finish. Competition season will wrap up with state contests across several programs, showcasing the talent and hard work of our students at the highest level. Students will also complete final industry exams, with many earning certifications that recognize their skills and preparation for life beyond high school.
May is also a special time for celebrations as we honor the Class of 2026. We’re proud of our graduates as they close out their high school journey and prepare for what’s next—college, trade school, military service, or entering the workforce.
As the school year winds down, we’re focused on finishing strong and celebrating the growth, milestones, and accomplishments that make this year one to remember.

A/V Student Earns Top Honors in Austin Video Contest on Flood Safety
Creativity met purpose as students took on the challenge of promoting flood safety through the annual “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” video contest, hosted by the Austin Watershed Protection Department. The program encourages students to use their voices and talents to share an important, life-saving message: never drive through flooded roadways.
Among this year’s standout participants was Kennedy Wendo, a senior who earned top honors in the Individual Category. Through thoughtful storytelling and clear messaging, Kennedy’s video captured both the urgency and importance of making safe choices during severe weather.
The contest is part of a broader effort by Austin Watershed Protection to educate the public about flood risks—especially in Central Texas, where flash flooding can develop quickly. Students are tasked with creating short public service announcements that emphasize awareness, decision-making, and personal responsibility, turning them into advocates for safety within their own communities.
Kennedy’s recognition highlights not only his creativity, but also the impact students can have when they use their platforms to inform and protect others. His work reflects the core message of the campaign: a simple decision to turn around can save lives.

SkillsUSA State Contest Results
Senior Elizabeth Salinas recently represented Elgin ISD at the SkillsUSA Texas State Leadership & Skills Conference held in Corpus Christi on April 10, after advancing from the district level in Automotive Service Technology.
At the state contest, Elizabeth competed in a rigorous four-hour event featuring 12 automotive service and professionalism stations designed to test both technical skill and workplace readiness. She delivered a strong performance, scoring roughly within 27% of a perfect score in a highly competitive field of 26 contestants.
Elizabeth was also one of only two female competitors in her event. Although she narrowly missed qualification for the national competition, her performance reflected a high level of preparation, dedication, and technical ability.
We are incredibly proud of Elizabeth’s commitment to her craft and the way she represented Elgin ISD on the state stage. Her success is a reflection of the hands-on learning and high expectations built into our Career & Technical Education programs.
Automotive instructor and SkillsUSA advisor is Michael Silkett.
TAFE Officer Attends Leadership Camp
At the TAFE Area 3 conference earlier this year, Elgin High School TAFE student Hailey Hill was elected as the 2026–2027 TAFE Area 3 Historian, earning a leadership position within the organization’s regional officer team.
Hailey recently attended the TAFE Officer Training Camp at Highland Lakes Camp from April 23–25. During the camp, she worked alongside fellow Area 3 officers to begin planning for the upcoming 2026–2027 Area 3 Conference.
Through team-building activities, leadership development sessions, and networking opportunities, Hailey is already contributing ideas and helping shape the direction of next year’s events. Her election and early involvement reflect her dedication to leadership and her commitment to supporting future educators.
We are proud of Hailey’s accomplishment and look forward to seeing the impact she will make in her role throughout the year ahead.
Education and Training instructor and TAFE Teacher Leader is Ashton Howell.
FFA Advances to Area SDE Contest
Elgin FFA members delivered strong performances at the Star District Speaking Development Event (SDE) Contest, with multiple students earning top placements and four events advancing to the Area contest on May 14.
The following students placed first in their respective events and qualified for Area: Grace Hagen (Ag Policy), Nico Munoz (Extemporaneous Speaking and Soil Stewardship), and Preston Maass (Plant Science). Additional results include Gabriela De La Cruz, who placed 3rd in Animal Science, and Melody Trabanino, who placed 4th in Natural Resources.
A special recognition goes to Preston Maass, who also completed the Area officer interview and exam process and is now an official Area Officer candidate—the first from Elgin in more than five years!
We are proud of all these students for their hard work, preparation, and leadership as they continue to represent Elgin FFA at a high level.

April Teacher Feature
Elgin ISD’s Law Enforcement teachers play a key role in preparing students for careers in public safety and related fields. With a focus on both technical skills and personal growth, they help students build a strong foundation in criminal justice, emergency response, and professional responsibility. This work is strengthened through partnerships with the Elgin Police Department and the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, providing students with real-world insight and connections to the field.
Through hands-on activities, scenario-based learning, and engaging instruction, students gain practical experience while also developing leadership, communication, ethics, and teamwork skills that apply to any career path.
Just as important, these teachers build strong relationships with students and foster a culture of accountability, service, and respect. Their guidance helps students grow in confidence and professionalism as they explore future opportunities in law enforcement and beyond.
Through their commitment and expertise—and the support of strong community partners—Elgin ISD’s Law Enforcement teachers are helping shape the next generation of responsible leaders and community servants.
SCHOOL 🤝 COMMUNITY
Learners to Leaders: CTE Students Take Part in HRE Career Day
Harvest Ridge Elementary students recently experienced Career Day in an engaging and interactive way. High school student leaders stepped into teaching roles, guiding younger learners through hands-on stations designed to introduce them to real-world skills and future opportunities available across Elgin ISD's Career and Technical Education programs.
Students from the welding, automotive, education, health science, and agriculture pathways brought their programs to life through interactive demonstrations and activities. Elementary learners had the opportunity to try on welding hoods, observe and participate in a tire rotation demo, make whipped cream during a food science activity, read a student-authored children’s book, and simulate fluid transfer in a health science station, among many other experiences.
The event not only introduced students to potential career pathways, but also highlighted the leadership and expertise of high school mentors who are actively developing their skills through CTE programs.

Wildcat BBQ Delivering More Than Meals
Wildcat BBQ played a key support role at the Wildcat Showcase on April 9, helping provide food service and contribute to the community atmosphere throughout the evening. The team arrived early to prepare hundreds of complimentary hotdogs using their competition smoker, adding to the welcoming, family-friendly environment planned for the event.
When severe weather shortened the showcase, students quickly adapted. Working alongside district staff, they helped distribute remaining food, secure equipment, break down tents, and assist with event cleanup. Their focus remained on working efficiently and supporting a smooth, safe conclusion for all attendees.
While the weather limited the full showcase of activities, other Career & Technical Education programs were still able to participate in a limited capacity, including Education and Training, Welding, Agriculture, and Law Enforcement. Even with abbreviated demonstrations, students and staff across programs remained present and engaged with the community.
The evening highlighted the collaborative spirit of CTE programs across the district—students stepping into real-world roles, supporting one another, and adapting to changing circumstances while continuing to serve the community.
Pictured are Wildcat BBQ team members who attended the event (back row, left to right): Francisco Gallegos, Melanie Moran, Yareli Arredondo, and Mellany Rodriguez; (front row, left to right): Antonio Zarate, Bethanee Mackenzie, Katherine Rios, and Ana Sustaita, along with advisor Madi Musick. The team advanced to the Texas High School BBQ State Competition last fall and will compete May 1–2 in Burnet, Texas.

P-TECH Alumni Featured by Workforce Partners in National Publication
A recent spotlight by StriveTogether shines a light on how communities are working together to improve student outcomes—and one Elgin ISD graduate is a standout example. StriveTogether is a national network that brings together educators, nonprofits, and civic leaders to help more students succeed from cradle to career, using data and collaboration to drive results.
Featured in the story is Kristian Charles, a 2022 graduate of Elgin High School’s P-TECH welding program, whose journey reflects the power of those partnerships in action.
The initiative highlighted in the article is led locally by E3 Alliance, a regional organization focused on strengthening education and workforce alignment across Central Texas. E3 Alliance works closely with Elgin ISD to expand access to high-quality career pathways, particularly in high-demand fields such as advanced manufacturing. By connecting school systems with colleges and industry partners, they help ensure students graduate with both the skills and opportunities needed to succeed.
Kristian’s story is a direct result of that work. As a high school student, he participated in a hands-on internship with Athena Manufacturing, gaining real-world experience in welding while still in the P-TECH program. That early exposure not only strengthened his technical abilities but also opened the door to a full-time career.
Today, Kristian remains employed with Athena Manufacturing as a professional welder, demonstrating the long-term value of meaningful industry partnerships and career-connected learning. His success reflects the mission of Elgin ISD’s P-TECH program: to prepare students for life after graduation with both knowledge and experience.
As highlighted by StriveTogether, stories like Kristian’s show what’s possible when schools, communities, and industry come together with a shared goal—creating clear, supported pathways from the classroom to a career.
Read the attached article or watch this video to learn more about Kristian's story and the work of our partners at E3 Alliance and StriveTogether to support college and career readiness.
