Reading - Ms. Eliason
We have also been working hard on writing a paragraph when responding to text questions. Students have the opportunity to make corrections based off of the scored writing rubric if they make get 6 out of 10 points or below. They need to email me once they have done so, so I can go back to rescore their writing. This helps them continue the learning process so they can be successful writers.
We started Unit 2 which is called "Characters at Crossroads". We have and will continue analyzing fictional texts to see how characters develop as the plot progresses. Our story this week was called, "Abuela Invents the Zero." With your child you should take the opportunity to discuss the main character, Connie, and what lesson she learned in the story, and how it can be applied to our own lives.
*If your child is in my homeroom class, I look forward to meeting with you next week!
Math - Ms. Simon
Kodiak Bears, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears
Test scores for the most recent unit test (Topic 1: Use Positive Rational Numbers) have been posted to Google Classroom. Students can login to view their scores, out of 16 points possible. There were two options to earn extra credit: two extra credit questions, and the creation of a study notecard. On Monday, we will review and reflect on the tests and work on test corrections, which will be homework for Monday and Tuesday night.
If your student is not satisfied with their score, they may request to retake the test by emailing me. Since we will need to make special arrangements with support staff scheduling and testing location availability, we need to know in advance who will participate in the retake.
The details of the retake opportunity are outlined below. The retake will assess the same skills. If they didn't use a note card the first time, this is a great learning opportunity to start taking advantage of resources that support studying and test-taking. They may bring a new, handwritten (not typed) 3"x5" note card—using both sides—for the retake.
Test Retake Date: Friday, October 9
Request must be emailed no later than: Tuesday, October 8
Retake scores will be posted after Fall Break and will replace the original score. Students must show their work & calculations to receive full credit on the retake.
Please reach out if you have any questions.
Polar Bears
Polar Bears spent the week preparing for the Topic 2 Assessment, which covered rational numbers and the coordinate plane. Test scores will be posted this weekend ahead of our conferences next week. As we dive into more advanced concepts next week, the material will step up in rigor—so I strongly encourage students to ask for help as soon as something isn't making sense.
Writing - Mr. Crump
Next week we are going to practice identifying credible sources that can be used in an argumentative essay and what makes a source credible in preparation for our next writing.
Science & Social Studies - Ms. Hines
Mark your calendars: Our Unit 2 Assessment will take place on October 29th.
Classroom Store
Our students will be using ClassBank this year, which is a digital classroom economy platform. At the end of each week, students will have the opportunity to purchase things with the money they earn from our classroom stores. Due to this, the 6th Grade Teachers are looking for items (candy, chips, fruit, fidgets, snacks, and little trinkets) to stock our classroom stores.
If you are able, please send items in with your students this week, or throughout the year!
Pajamas and Popsicles!
Wow! Way to show your support Pine Lane! We will be celebrating this victory on Friday, October 9th with pajamas and popsicles. Please remind your student to leave their stuffies and blankets at home on Friday.
Book Fair
6th Grade students WILL NOT visit the book fair with their classroom teachers. However, we will send students with E-Wallets to spend their money.
Students are not allowed to visit the book fair, before or after school without an adult present.

Candy Wars!
It's time for the friendliest battle of the year. Candy Wars begins 10/1 and runs through 10/28. Students should bring in bags of wrapped candy; the bigger the bag, the better the battle.
All of this candy will be given out during our Fall Fest Trunk or Treat on October 30. We can't wait to see you there!
