Scott Middle School's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening In Ms. Ramirez's Classroom?
Ms. Ramirez teaches 6th and 8th grade small group ELA. Students are fine tuning phonological awareness skills using the Heggerty program. Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and play with the sounds in spoken words (e.g. adding, deleting or changing the initial, middle or ending sound in words). Learners are also working through the Sonday reading program.
Sonday follows the Orton-Gillingham approach by being:
Multisensory – uses visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile learning (e.g., saying, seeing, and writing sounds).
Systematic and cumulative – skills are taught in a carefully sequenced order that builds from simple to complex.
Explicit – skills and rules are taught directly, not left for students to discover.
Diagnostic and prescriptive – teaching is guided by ongoing assessment and adjusted to student needs.
Ms. Ramirez' 6th grade ELA class is reading and analyzing Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. 8th grade students are enjoying the unit on how author's build suspense. Student's have read and analyzed Button, Button by Richard Matheson and Lamb to Slaughter by Roald Dahl.
Capybara and French Fry are our beloved guinea pigs. When a student or adult is having a rough day, they have the opportunity to come watch, feed, pet, hold or snuggle one of both of the little guys. Students love helping to take care of them.
Red Clay Field Trips Have Started
Half of our 6th Graders went on Friday to work on team building. The other half will be going on Monday.
Eighth Graders have their trips next week. They will be working in teams completing a STEM Activity. We are so grateful for the partnership we have with Red Clay Alliance!
Welcome, Ms. Jackson!
We want to take a moment and welcome Ms. Jackson, the newest addition to our superb seventh grade team. Ms. Jackson was hired over the summer and has popped in a few times to get acquainted with our Scott students and staff, but officially started this past Monday. She joins us from the Berks County Intermediate Unit and has many years experience teaching middle school Language Arts. We are so excited to have her here!
Ms. Czerpak, who has been teaching 7th grade ELA in Ms. Jackson's class, has moved up to our 6th grade team. She will be finishing the year in Mr. Henry's ELA class, now that Mr. Henry is supporting Scott as our Dean of Students. Thank you for your flexibility and support as we help our staff and students settle in. We are looking forward to a great year of learning in both classrooms.
October's Focus is Hallway Behavior
Our PBIS focus for the month of October is hallway behavior. Students should be walking to classes and arriving on time. Students that follow these expectations will be attending an extra recess during the first week of November. Students that do not, will be staying in and completing a lesson on safety and taking ownership for their actions.
Our staff has noticed that many students are using transition time to find friends and "play." Students are being referred to the office for running, playing tag, and squirting water from water bottles at each other. These behaviors are minor but can also be very dangerous if an accident happens. When conduct referrals come to the office, families are called, and depending on the seriousness of the infraction, consequences are given according to our code of conduct. Mr. Altland and I appreciate your support in speaking with your students about these expectations.
Over the next few weeks, we are adding another layer of urgency to help our students understand that the hallways need to be safe. Our administration will be conducting "Hall sweeps." After the transition time is over, staff will be instructed not to let any students in their classrooms and students in the halls will be collected and taken to our auditorium. Mr. Altland, Mr. Henry and I will support the students in calling home and explaining why they are not in class. They will stay in the auditorium and complete work which we have asked for from the staff. At the change of the next period they will continue with their day. If students are caught again in the same day, they will be calling back to schedule a detention. If they are caught multiple times throughout the week, the phone call will be to share that they have an In School Suspension.
We are hoping that this process will help our students understand the urgency of getting to class, staying in class to learn, and being safe. Once again, we appreciate your support!
