What is the Role of the Learning Coach?
Let's Explore the Importance of the Learning Coach at OHVA!
Our Parent Compact, part of the OHVA handbook, helps us understand the role of the learning coach, as well as the sites searchable at help.k12.com. Let's go over the dimensions of OHVA's expectations of the Learning Coach role.
The Learning Coach (LC) is the adult in the home who assist the student with completing their daily tasks. The amount of assistance depends on the student's grade level and the student's ability to complete work independently.
Elementary School (K-5)
A strong oversight is required for students in Grades K-5. The Elementary School Learning Coach will be actively involved with the student spending an average of 3-6 hours each day. During a typical week, the Learning Coach will:
Assist with lessons
Monitor comprehension
Can modify daily schedule
Log attendance
Communicate with teacher
Middle School (6-8)
The type of assistance provided by the Middle School Learning Coach varies, based on the student's independence. The Learning Coach will spend an average of 2-4 hours a day. During a typical week, the Learning Coach will:
Assist with some lessons
Monitor comprehension
Encourage independent learning
Log attendance
Communicate with teachers
High School
The High School Learning Coach may spend less time assisting their student based on the student's ability to work independently. The average amount of time spent by the Learning Coach with a High School student is 1-2 hours a day. During a typical week, the Learning Coach will:
Assist with some lessons, varies based on student's independence
Verifies lesson completion to ensure student is on track
Supports student independence
Attends teacher conferences

4. Parent/Learning Coach Compact & Contents...
All Legal Guardians (LC or not) will sign the Parent Compact.
The purpose of this Compact is to set expectations for Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA) parents/Learning Coaches. Your child’s educational success, a primary goal of OHVA, can only be achieved if you understand your key role in following the curricular and attendance requirements below.
My role, which is vital for my student’s academic achievement, is valued and respected among administrators, teachers, staff and volunteers at OHVA.
I believe that my student has the ability to grow academically.
I will abide by OHVA’s policies and procedures as outlined in the OHVA School Handbook.
I will maintain continuous Internet service and make sure my student has daily access to participate in the school.
I understand that the Ohio Virtual Academy program includes the K12 curriculum, periodic assessments, Live Classes, and other instructional tools, specific to my student’s academic requirements. I understand that students will be required to attend and participate in live CC sessions on a daily basis. I will actively supervise my student while participating in the OHVA academic program. Learning Coach guidance is essential for students in the K-8 program and also needed on a regular basis in high school.
My student is enrolled in a public school and must meet the state attendance requirements. Students in grades K-12 require a minimum of 920 hours per year (full year's enrollment). To reach my student’s academic goals, average daily attendance may range from 5 to 8 hours.
As the Learning Coach, I am responsible to accurately record attendance and progress daily in my student’s LMS to reflect online and offline school work. I will keep a written record of offline school work hours. Insufficient hours recorded in the system over time is a truancy issue and could result in my student’s removal from OHVA.
My student will participate in all required state achievement and diagnostic testing. It is my responsibility to provide transportation to and from the test site(s). Testing dates are determined by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW).
I will actively engage with OHVA staff by participating in conferences, reading email on a daily basis, submit requested assignments, and attend face-to-face (F2F) activities throughout the year, including state testing, and ETR and IEP meetings as required. If I have designated another person to act as Learning Coach for my student, I will conference jointly with the Learning Coach and OHVA teacher(s).
I will work with and treat administrators, teachers, staff, and volunteers professionally, understanding that staff must follow set schedules and policies.
Failure to follow the school’s program requirements may result in my student’s removal from Ohio Virtual Academy.
5. Download the OHVA App and Register
Keep Updated on OHVA events and Activities
This is a different app than the K12 app. This OHVA app is red and white, and has ALL our news and announcements, plus MANY resources for you. This is a different login - you create an account and register, with your learning coach email - separate from the school login. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AND REGISTER.
6. Connect Your Students with Activities and Events
Connect your Students to Social Opportunities!
We have 54 clubs this year at levels K-2, 3-5, MS, and HS. Please click on THIS LINK to explore the options. On this main page, please click on your students' grade band(s) to go to the options for that grade band. From there click on any picture (or the button for sign ups) to get to the sign up sheet.
Sometimes Sign Ups Take a While 🙄
In our new K12 systems, the students' sign ups are posted to Power School classrooms. Then, the PS has a synchronization cycle to Canvas. It can take 2-3 days for the sign up to become synced to the student platform/account. It appears that there are sometimes delays and failed syncs from earlier in the year.
If a student writes to us, we re-add the student but it still will take 2-3 days for the sign up to sync. In this case, email the host of the club to send your students the meeting URL from your calendar setup for the club, so that they can attend if the club meets the same week. We appreciate your patience and tenacity! Thanks.
7. BE CONNECTED with other Learning Coaches
Our many Learning Coach Facebook groups are available
- From NEWBIES to EACH GRADE BAND
- From SPECIAL SUPPORT to BOOSTERS
- Learning Coach connections will help you every day.
- It is a place to ask questions and seek information, make new friends and get involved with other learning coaches.
NEW! K12 has opened the Learning Coach Community! And, a searchable (by geographic locations) LCC "Friends Near Me"
Please go into your Learning Coach Account on Canvas and click on LC Community in the left side menu.
Use your LC credentials to sign in, and you should have access to friend "OHVA" as a community as well! See below for photos to assist you in connecting with the LCC!
This will complete Module One. Please take a minute give us your insights on the LCA's Module 1 content.
You have completed modules for Learning Coach Academy. Thank you!
Your prizes will come in two to three weeks from our office in Maumee, OH. We will appreciate your patience. For Modules 1-4, you will receive a certificate and small prizes.
