We are excited to invite families to our Winter Arts Showcase! Our students' visual art will be on display and the 6th grade music classes and 8th grade band will perform!

DOE regulations require that all visitors entering the building show proof of vaccination. A recording of the show will be shared with families after the performance for those unable to attend in person.

6th Grade - Thematic Essays

In 6th Grade ELA, students recently finished writing thematic essays based on the book The Skin I'm In. Their essays explored issues of identity, friendship, and colorism. Our 6th graders used their skills to annotate, analyze, and discuss the themes of the book and practiced using textual evidence in their essays.

7th Grade - Literary Analysis

In 7th Grade ELA, students are analyzing factors that shape identity using the mentor texts found in Take the Mic, a collection of short stories on the themes of social justice, resistance, and equity. After reading these stories, students will choose from a set of possible final products that incorporate both literary analysis and creative self expression to demonstrate their understanding of how literary themes and characterization shape and are shaped by identity.

8th Grade - Memoir Writing

In 8th Grade ELA, students are studying the author's craft of writing a memoir, using the mentor texts of the short story anthology Fresh Ink and the graphic novel New Kid. They are examining plot elements and descriptive writing across genres in order to integrate them into their own short memoirs. Students will connect their reading of New Kid to recent controversies around book banning and censorship.
