Soaring to New Heights
The Eagles' Guide to Assessment and Accountability
As we enter November, I am reminded of the many blessings that enrich our Pettus ISD community. This season invites us to pause, reflect, and express appreciation for the people and moments that make a difference in our lives each day.
May this month be filled with meaningful connections, moments of gratitude, and opportunities to serve one another. Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving and a restful, joyful holiday season ahead.
HB 3 Instructional Goals and Objectives
HB 3 Board Goals Requirement:
- School boards are required to adopt plans in early childhood literacy and math, as well as college, career, and military readiness. All plans are required to include:
- at least one assigned district-level administrator to submit an annual report to the board on the district's progress;
- an annual review by the board at a public meeting;
- an annual report posted on district and campus websites; and,
- specific, quantifiable, annual goals for five years.
Texas Physical Activity Mandate
Under Texas Education Code Section 28.002 and Board Policy EHAB (Legal), a district shall require students in kindergarten through grade 5 to participate in moderate or vigorous physical activity for at least 30 minutes throughout the school year, as part of the district's physical education program or through structured activity during a campus's daily recess.
If a district determines, for any particular grade level, that requiring moderate or vigorous daily physical activity is impractical due to scheduling concerns or other factors, the district may as an alternative required a student in that grade level to participate in moderate or vigorous physical activity for at least 135 minutes during each school week.
A district must provide an exemption for a student who is unable to participate in the required physical activity because of illness or disability.
Under Pettus ISD's SHAC-approved Wellness Plan, all elementary students will participate in at least 20 minutes of daily supervised physical activity - preferably outdoors. School staff will actively encourage moderate to vigorous play by providing dedicated space, equipment, and verbal encouragement.
Additionally, Pettus ISD strictly prohibits withholding recess or physical activity (including activity used to satisfy P.E. curriculum requirements) as a disciplinary measure.
Senate Bill 1191: Calculation of High School GPA
Senate Bill (SB) 1191 requires, rather than permits, the commissioner to develop a standard method for computing a student's high school grade point average (GPA) that provides for additional weight to be given to certain high school courses.
