Student OMNY Cards – Important Information

Some students have reported issues with their NYC Public Schools OMNY cards not working when tapped on buses or subway turnstiles. This is a known citywide issue and is not unique to LaGuardia.

Unlike the old MetroCards, OMNY cards do not use a magnetic stripe and cannot be “demagnetized.” OMNY cards use contactless chip technology. When a card stops working, it is usually due to physical damage—such as bending, creasing, or pressure from being loose in a backpack or pocket—which can affect the internal chips.

Tips to help protect OMNY cards:

  • Keep the card in a protective sleeve, wallet, or hard card holder

  • Avoid bending, folding, or placing heavy items on top of the card

  • Keep the card dry and away from spills

  • Tap the card flat against the OMNY reader (centered) when entering transit

Replacing an OMNY Card

If a student’s OMNY card is not working, they should report it to Ms. Javier in the Attendance Office, Room 201, as soon as possible so a replacement can be requested. Replacement cards may take time to arrive, so the sooner you report the issue, the quicker you will receive a replacement. (Once a card is reported as non-working, the card is deactivated in the system).

All schools are given a limited amount of OMNY cards to be used as replacement cards. As NYCPS and LaGuardia are adjusting to OMNY cards, there will be times when students need to wait for their replacement cards to arrive. Just recently, LaGuardia received an increased number of cards. If your student is waiting on their replacement card, please have them go to room 201 to pick it up.

Everyone recognizes the importance of having OMNY cards and students having reliable transportation to and from school and after school programs. Anything families can do to make sure OMNY cards are safe and not lost is appreciated.

Ms. Rosenstein’s Spanish classes joyfully brought language and culture to life beyond the classroom. Spanish 1 students explored Spanish Harlem, celebrating New York City’s rich Latino heritage through vibrant murals, lively Latin dance at the Museum of the City of New York, and delicious Puerto Rican cuisine. Spanish 3 students enjoyed a creative cartoon-making workshop led by a well-known Mexican illustrator and capped off the experience with a visit to a Dominican restaurant, where they explored Latin culture and the immigrant experience through art, storytelling, and food. These adventures turned Spanish class into a citywide celebration of language, culture, creativity, and "comida deliciosa!"

Grades 9 - 11 NYS School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo Adjudication Grades 9 - 11 NYS School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo Adjudication

User uploaded image

(This is an optional adjudication and not a school requirement)

NYSSMA provides students with an opportunity to be assessed by a NYSSMA certified adjudicator on solo or ensemble music they have prepared. This is not a school requirement.

NYSSMA is the New York State School Music Association. It is a professional association of music teachers from throughout New York State. NYSSMA’s parent organization is The National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

NYSSMA is best known for sponsoring festivals each spring in which students have the opportunity to perform solos for an impartial adjudication. This process has long been held up as one of the finest examples of authentic assessment and is designed to help students to improve their musical abilities. Participation in NYSSMA is voluntary and provides students an opportunity to evaluate their own level of achievement and to set goals for making progress.

Judges hear each student play a graded selection from the NYSSMA Manual, prescribed scales (see requirements for your instrument/voice) and a short sight reading selection (8 measures). Students are then given a written report with comments on their performance and a grade. Grades range from Outstanding, Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Fair and Needs Improvement for Levels I-IV, and A+ through D- in Levels V, VI and All State. In some cases, students may receive “Comments Only.” Students who feel that they are not well prepared and would not like a score can request “Comments Only” (Also known as a Festival Rating). If a judge feels that a low score may make the experience a less positive one for the student, they may suggest “Comments Only.” This is also given if a student’s solo is not listed in the current NYSSMA Manual.

Additional Information

  1. All solos must be listed in the current NYSSMA Manual, and be sure to check publisher information. Private teachers do not always have a current manual. You should always double check with your child’s music teacher at school to make sure your solo is listed and that the publisher is correct.
  2. Before NYSSMA you must purchase an original copy of your solo. No photocopies allowed! If it is public domain, you will need to show that it is not on the site illegally. If you have an ePrint solo, please print the receipt and have it with you when you arrive to play. You will need to have a copy for yourself and for the judge (accompaniment/piano part is accepted). If your solo is unaccompanied, then purchase two copies of the solo.

2026 Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (TMSLIP) 2026 Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (TMSLIP)

Don't Wait until the last minute

he Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program (TMSLIP) offers New York City public high school students the opportunity to explore the legal profession through paid summer internships and professional development training. Over the course of six to eight weeks, students are placed with law firms, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies, gaining valuable insight into the day-to-day work of legal professionals.

Before placement, participants complete an application and interview process to help identify the best match between each student and a host employer. The program runs annually from March through August and is part of the New York City Bar Association’s ongoing effort to expand access to the legal profession and strengthen the pipeline for future lawyers and leaders. Please note that student interns are employed by their host organizations, not by the New York City Bar Association.

The Office for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging at the New York City Bar Association invites your students to apply for the 2026 Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program. TMSLIP is an intensive internship program that places diverse New York City high school students with legal employers for the summer. Since 1993, the program has provided students with experiences designed to develop them as young professionals while exposing them to the legal field.

In addition to summer placements, students receive supplemental programming to prepare them for their internships and future academic and career pursuits. Please direct interested students to apply using the provided application link and review the attached brochure for more information. We encourage you to share this opportunity with students, families, and colleagues. Applications and all accompanying materials must be submitted no later than January 12, 2026.
