An End to School Year Prayer

At the end of this school year we give thanks to God:

For all the teaching and learning that have occurred in our school,

For the talents and gifts that have been shared

and the challenges that have been faced.

For the burdens that have been lifted,

For the hurts that have been healed,

For the respect and care that have been given.

We give thanks for the friendships that have just begun and for those that have grown:

For the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles.

For the hope that has lifted our hearts on the dark days,

And for the love that has kept us going.

We give thanks for the community that we are.

We ask you Lord— bless our families as we take our holidays,

may our time together leave us with memories to cherish.

Amen.

Administrator's Message

It is hard to believe, but the month of June is already upon us. As we begin to bring the school year to a close, we are provided with an opportunity to reflect on this most wonderful, productive, enriching year. This community has been very supportive of our efforts, and have allowed us to continue to share our educational gifts and talents with St. Christopher to continue to encourage students to live out our motto of "Hand in Hand, Heart to Heart, United in Faith."

To our graduating class of 2025, we wish you farewell and good luck as you begin your adventure into high school. We are extremely proud of you. Your hard work, commitment, courage and perseverance are to be admired. May God bless you on your continued journey in learning and faith.

The end of the school year brings with it a mix of emotions. We will all have an opportunity to say “goodbye” to a few staff as they move onto new adventures in other schools and new chapters of their life. We must also bid adieu to Mr. Herter, Ms. Comi and Ms. Fernandez, Ms. O'Dea, Ms. Ferrante, Ms. Strecker, Ms. Koko who have been a part of our community. We are always hopeful that opportunities will bring us the chance to work with you each again!

Lastly, we would like to extend warm wishes to all our dads and father figures for a very Happy Father’s Day. We hope you enjoy a special time with family and friends.

I. Sauve and C. Fernandes

PA Day

There will be a PA Day on Monday June 9, 2025. There will be no school for students.

Dress Code

At the beginning of March, all families received a communication from the Board regarding updates to Policy P-2006 Dress Code and School Uniforms. A copy of this communication is being enclosed with the Weekend Update email for your review. Of note for our students in an Elementary school setting are as follows, “as part of these changes, dress code expectations now require that students ensure the area from the top of the shoulders to mid-thigh is covered.” This expectation, along with the reminder that clothing should not contain offensive or inappropriate messaging, has been reviewed with our students each morning during the announcements.

Dress Code

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) remains committed to fostering a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment where all students feel a sense of belonging and can achieve success. Dress codes and school uniforms are designed to support diversity, accessibility, safety, and the dignity of all students.

On January 28, 2025, the Board of Trustees approved updates to Policy P-2006 Dress Code and School Uniform. As part of these changes, dress code expectations now require that students ensure the area from the top of the shoulders to mid-thigh is covered.

Additionally, the DPCDSB dress code continues to prohibit any clothing with messages that contain or depict offensive or inappropriate content. Students are not permitted to wear attire that promotes:

• Hate

• Discrimination

• Illegal activity

• Profanity

• Violence

• Political language

• Threats to health and safety

• Any content that violates the Ontario Human Rights Code

We appreciate your support in ensuring our schools remain welcoming and respectful spaces for all students.

Ticks and Lyme Disease

With the arrival of warmer temperatures and more time spent outdoors, we wanted to remind you how to protect yourself and your loved ones from Blacklegged Ticks, which are native to our region, live in wooded areas, tall grasses and bushes, and may carry Lyme Disease.

In this regard, we encourage you to read the attached fact sheet from Health Ontario which indicates how to prevent tick bites when outdoors.

Encouraging Active Play

Daily movement and active play are vital for children’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. When kids develop basi movement skills like running, jumping, throwing and balancing, they build the confidence and ability to stay active for life!

Home plays an important role in encouraging these habits. Here are a few simple ways to support active lifestyles, allowing for more opportunities for children to move, explore and play.

  • Encourage outdoor play by bringing children and their friends to parks or other natural settings.
  • Take short walks or bike rides as a family.
  • Play simple backyard games like tag, hopscotch or nature scavenger hunts.
  • Limit screen time and make space for movement indoors. From 10 Lego games to get kids moving, to these 6 active games you can play with a pair of socks, there are lots of ways to have fun indoors if you’re willing to be a little creative!

Active for life has fun, inclusive and practical ideas to keep kids moving and learning with free resources for families!

Sun Safety

With summer approaching and the warmer weather we are reminded about sun safety. Overexposure to the sun can cause skin damage. We remind students regularly to take precautions to protect their skin during recess times and to take precautions to be safe in the sun. The following are some suggestions when working and playing in the sun:

¨ Drink cool water. Anyone in a hot environment should drink cool water in small amounts frequently—one cup every 20 minutes. Avoid caffeinated soft drinks which cause dehydration.

¨ Dress Appropriately. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing

¨ Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and the skin

¨ When possible, stay out of direct sunlight

¨ Wear sun block; the higher the protection factor number, the greater the protection.

Parents are encouraged to reinforce these strategies with their children regularly.

Secondary Summer School (Grade 8 transitioning to Grade 9)

Save the Date-First Time Rider

First Time Rider is an educational and awareness program designed to familiarize young children, new riders, and parents with school buses. This informative program includes a safety video, on-board instruction, and a fun bus ride.

Attached please see the preliminary announcement flyer for the STOPR First Time Rider program scheduled on Saturday August 23, 2025.

Pediculosis: Head Lice

At different times throughout the year, especially in the winter when students are wearing hats and hoodies, schools experience an increase in the number of cases of head lice. In an effort to be proactive, we ask that your child’s hair be checked periodically to ensure that they do not have head lice. Should you discover the presence of lice or nits, we would appreciate being informed. Helpful information can also be obtained from a pharmacist or the local Public Health Department. Head lice is spread only by direct contact with a 'case', often through the sharing of combs and brushes, exchanging of hats, etc.

Catholic School Council

Communication between home and school is greatly enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic School Council. Please note that our Council is comprised of parents, school staff as well as community and parish representatives. The aim of the Catholic School Council is to support school activities and students through involvement and fund raising. The School Council also provides a forum for parents to meet and share information and ideas concerning the school community.

A reminder that if you are interested in volunteering within the school in any capacity, a Valid Criminal Reference Check (CRC), with Vulnerable Sector and Local Records Check completed by Peel Regional Police is required. The cost is $35. Please note that there may be some time required to process a CRC, thus waiting for an announced volunteer opportunity to obtain your CRC may not provide sufficient time for processing. Once the school has a valid CRC on file, we will not need a new CRC yearly, rather, a yearly Offence Declaration will suffice.

Thank you,

St. Christopher Catholic School Council

Fire Drills and Lockdown Practice

During the school year we will be rehearsing and will continue to rehearse with students a number of emergency response situations including lock down and fire drills. All schools are required by Board policy to practice these procedures throughout the year. We have these ‘practice drills’ for precautionary purposes only so that in the event of an actual emergency, students will be prepared to respond in a safe and responsible manner. We will also be practicing a Lock Down Drill. During this drill, the outer doors will be locked and the office will be unavailable during the time of the drill. No one will be allowed to enter or exit during the drill while the emergency protocol is being followed. The day will continue as normal following the drill. Thank you for your patience.

Concussion Protocol

As per Ministry of Education direction, our Board has a Concussion Protocol in place. Again this school year, ALL students who sustain a head injury during the school day, however minor, will receive a Concussions Are Serious pamphlet to take home. We ask parents/guardians to review this pamphlet and seek medical attention for your son/daughter if you feel it is required. As in previous years, all head injuries will be logged and reported to parents/guardians directly. We ask that you please inform the school as soon as possible if and when your son/daughter sustains a concussion as a result of a school incident or as a result of an activity outside of school. Questions or concerns regarding this policy should be directed to the Main Office. Your cooperation and assistance in this regard are appreciated.

MEDICAL ALERT– Sabrina’s Law (Anaphylaxis)

Sabrina’s Law is an Act to protect anaphylactic pupils in publicly funded schools in Ontario. Named “Sabrina’s Law” in honour of an Ontario student who died following an anaphylactic reaction in 2003, this law requires that every school board establish and maintain an anaphylaxis policy.

If your child has a severe allergic reaction to peanuts, peanut by-products, bee/wasp stings etc., please let the school know as soon as possible. It is essential that the information you provide us with is accurate and up-to-date. There are various forms which need to be completed by you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store and dispense an EPI-pen or any other medication at school.

We continue to have both students and staff with severe, life threatening allergy to certain foods, such as peanuts and nuts. This is a medical condition that may cause severe and life threatening reactions to certain allergens within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their by-products.

Please do not send food products to be shared in your child’s classroom. If you would like your child to share their special day/birthday with their classmates, we suggest that you consider non-food items such as pencils or stickers.

Letters have been sent home with the students whose classroom members have specific allergies. Please check with your child, and in their backpack, for letters regarding the type of allergy and products to avoid in your child’s classroom. Please pay careful consideration to school lunches and snacks while continuing to refrain from sending in items that are made of, or contain, nuts or peanuts. We offer our heartfelt thanks for your support in making our school a safer environment for all.

Asthma Friendly School Ryan's Law

Ryan’s Law is an Act to protect Asthmatic pupils in publicly funded schools in Ontario. If your child has asthma please let the school know immediately. It is essential that the information you provide us with is accurate and up-to-date.

Ryan’s Law introduced policies and procedures that:

 Allow your child to carry his/her asthma reliever (rescue) inhaler (with your permission).

 Reduce your child’s contact with asthma triggers.

 Develop an individual plan for every student with asthma, including recommendations from their health-care providers and current emergency contacts. This will be kept on file at the school.

If you have more questions about

Ryan’s Law?

Call The Lung Association Lung Health Information Line at 1-888-344-LUNG (5864), email info@on.lung.ca, or visit www.RyansLaw.ca.

Storage/Administration of Medication

If a child is required to bring medication to school, procedures regarding the administration of medication shall only be adopted:

· when requested by the parents/guardians; and

· when authorized by a physician; and

· when medication must be provided during school hours

A designated staff member must administer medication; hence, a signed request/authorization form from the parents/guardians and the supervising physician, must be obtained. These forms are available through the school office. Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually. If your child requires medication please have all pertinent forms completed and returned with the medication to the office as soon as possible

All medication will be housed in a safe location. Medication must not be kept in the child’s possession or in the classroom except for EpiPens and asthma inhalers.

It is highly encouraged that students who have an anaphylactic allergy or who have asthma, keep their epi-pen and/or inhaler on their person at all times. If able, it is recommended that your child bring two epipens and/or two asthma inhaler to the school. This would allow your child to keep this medication on their person as well as ensuring that the school office has an additional set of medication.

Please note that school staff cannot dispense medication of any kind without the proper physician authorization and a properly labeled container, (i.e. prescription bottle or original over the counter container).
