Attendance Phone Line
Please be sure to call in your student's absence using the Leonard Attendance Phone Line (248-823-3301). Your child's absence will be marked unexcused if the office doesn't hear from you. Please note: teachers do not notify the office when parents contact them about absences.
ELD Graduates!
This week, we proudly celebrated our recent graduates of our English Language Development Program. These remarkable multilingual students have reached an exciting milestone through their hard work and dedication, and they should be very proud of their achievement!
PTO Trunk or Treat - October 23rd
It’s time for our annual Leonard Trunk-or-Treat! This year, we are hosting the event back at Leonard! For the event to succeed, we need many families willing to host a trunk. Please consider signing up by clicking on the flyer or scanning the QR code in the flyer.
More event details:
- The event starts at 6:30 PM for trunk-or-treaters.
- If you are hosting a trunk, you may begin arriving at 6:00 PM to set up your car.
- All families are invited to donate candy to the candy monster at school. Your child can bring in unopened bags of candy to put in the candy monster. These donations will help subsidize the candy that families distribute that night.
- There will be a “Best Trunk Contest!"
- New this year- Troy Police will be joining us for a touch-a-truck addition and we will have Detroit Mini Donuts available for donuts and refreshments!
Halloween
Thursday, October 29th
Our school community will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 29th. We invite the children to wear school-appropriate costumes if they would like (it is completely optional). Costumes cannot be violent or scary (no blood, gore, or weapons). Additionally, costumes need to be culturally appropriate. Please make sure costumes do not diminish or stereotype others' rich histories or traditions.
Kindergarten will have their parade at 10:45 AM and their class parties will begin immediately following the parade at 11:00 AM.
Grades 1-5 will have their parade (outdoors if the weather allows) beginning at 2:45 PM. Grades 1-5 will have their class parties immediately following the parade; starting around 3:00 PM.
Because we are an allergy considerate community, we will not be serving food at the class parties. There will be games and fun activities for the students to enjoy. Depending on what the room parents plan, there may be a goody bag that goes home that contains food; but food should not be consumed during the party.
Parents are invited to join the class parties to help with the fun!
Leonard's 2nd Annual Spelling Bee
Leonard is hosting our second annual Scripps National Spelling Bee competition!
All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Leonard students are invited to participate. The top 5th grade winner will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee hosted by Oakland Schools.
Leonard Spelling Bee begins: Wednesday, January 27, 2027
Oakland Schools Regional Spelling Bee: March 14, 2027
Scripps National Spelling Bee: June 1-3
Please register by October 29, 2026 - just click on the flyer and fill out the form. Study lists will be sent home to all registered participants in November. Children are encouraged to study at home (class time will not be provided to study for the bee).
5th Grade Troy Fitness Run
5th graders can still register for the Fitness Run, but they will not receive a shirt. Click on the flyer or scan the QR code to register.
Forgotten Items (Lunches, Water bottles, Instruments)
For most forgotten items, there is no need for parents to bring them to school. While there are always emergencies and exceptions, please help us reinforce the core value of responsibility with the children. This is a safe place to learn responsibility and grow. We promise we would never let a child go hungry or thirsty. If they've forgotten a lunch, we can provide one. It may not be their favorite, but it will be okay. If they've forgotten their instrument, they will be okay for one class and will likely do a better job of remembering it in the future.
Elementary school is the perfect place for kids to learn how to handle these types of feelings and circumstances. Thanks for your partnership!

Leonard Walking Club - through Nov. 18th
Our Leonard Walking Club meets on Wednesdays at 8:30 AM! Students and families are welcome to join us for a morning walk around the track before school. Students can earn paws for each lap they complete and work toward fun rewards along the way!
No sign-up is needed—just drop your child off near the playgrounds between 8:30–8:45 AM and have them join us on the track. Please have your child bring their backpack and place it inside the fence.
Parents are encouraged to join us, too! This is a great opportunity to be active alongside your child and model healthy, active habits as a family. We would love to see our Leonard families walking, talking, and getting their day started together!
We hope to see you out there! Go Leopards!

An Extra Set of Clothes - A Backpack Stash
Please make sure that every student has an extra set of weather-appropriate clothes in their backpack (including shirt, pants, socks, and underwear). These can just be something old from their closet that can live in a plastic bag in their backpack.
The clothes are helpful for so many reasons. Kids can spill their lunches, have a bathroom accident, or get muddy during recess. Having the extra clothes allows your child to quickly change and get back to the fun, and prevents us from having to interrupt your day. Without the extra set of clothes, we have to call home and have someone bring clothes up to the school. Thanks for your help with this!
PTO Information
Our Leonard PTO is a wonderful organization that provides opportunities for our families to extend and enrich our community and our children's school experiences. Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday, November 17th at 6:30 PM.
Did you know...
- You're already a member!
- There is no membership fee for our PTO - having a child attend Leonard is the only requirement.
- You can come to one, some, or all of the meetings. Attending a meeting is mostly about making friends and learning about what's happening in the school. Also, just by attending a meeting, you aren't committing to volunteer in any way (although, there are always opportunities to pitch in if you're looking for some!).
