Week 13
November 2-6, 2026

Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet (ASMSM)
Shout Outs
We had a super eventful week! Red Ribbon Week and the Costume Parade were filled with so much learning and fun. Thank you, Mr. Ruiz, Ms. Gilbreath, and Ms. Sheppard, for leading our awesome leadership students as they ran and facilitated everything. Thank you, Mr. Mendez, for the decorations and for capturing everything in photos and videos.
Our PTA, led by Mrs. Walker, hosted a phenomenal Fall Festival. Always thinking about our school community, they provided food and free games for our students and families to enjoy. It was very festive and fun! Thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers, and once again, thank you to our ASB for all of your help!
The full video is taking a little longer to upload. Please circle back next week to check it out. Meanwhile, join us for the Monday Morning Assembly as we will announce the Student of the Months, Birthdays, October Attendance Challenge Donut Winners, Storybook Pumpkin Winners. The gift baskets awaits.
Daylight Savings
It's time to FALL BACK! This year, clocks fall back on November 1, 2026.
How it can affect students:
- Sleep: The spring change costs an hour of sleep, and many students (teens especially) are tired and less attentive for several days afterward. Sleep researchers generally find that the spring shift is harder on the body than the fall one.
- Morning darkness: In spring and in the weeks after fall, some students wait for buses or walk to school in the dark, which raises safety concerns. In fall, darker evenings affect after-school activities and sports practice.
- Behavior and learning: Teachers often report more irritability, lower focus, and more tardiness or absences right after the change.
- Routines: Younger students and students with sleep or sensory needs can take a week or more to readjust.
Practical steps for a school:
- Remind families a few days ahead to shift bedtimes gradually, in 15–20 minute steps.
- Review bus stop and crossing safety, and consider reflective gear or reminders for walkers.
- Plan lighter assessments the Monday after the spring change.
- Check that outdoor activity times still work with the daylight.
And for this coming week, ASMSM will work hard to ROCK THE CLOCK! We are working on ZERO TARDIES! How can you help? Students are competing by grade level for a PIZZA PARTY lunch on Friday the 6th. Each grade level can earn anywhere from 100 points to 25 points on any given day. Points are tabulated on Friday by 8:30 and the pizza party will be announced over the PA.
Month of Gratitude
Farewell Mrs. Maisterra
Friday, November 6th
Friday will be Mrs. Maisterra's final day with us as our TSP/CPA Coordinator. Her new adventure awaits as she moves to a new school to share her expertise and love for education.
Here is a message from Mrs. Maisterra: Thank you Arroyo Seco staff and families for allowing me to be a part of your story. It's been a privilege to serve this amazing community. I take with me many wonderful memories and great lessons. Wishing you all the best always! XO!
Choir
Due to low interest, we will wait until 2nd semester to possibly host Choir. I know a lot of students are involved in other activities right now. Thank you for understanding.

Read to Achieve
October 26 - December 4
Do you love to read! Log your minutes for the Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge sponsored by the Los Angeles Clippers and win prizes!
Students will be eligible for incentives when they read at least 500 minutes during the program. We look forward to your child participating in this year's Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Gilbreath at k.gilbreath@lausd.net.
8th Grade Parents
DUE: Friday, November 6th
Attentional all 8th grade parents! If you haven't already, we need you to complete your online application for high school for your child. If you do nothing, your child may not have a high school placement.
Because our students are magnet students, it would be great if they continue at a magnet school for high school. Make your selection at the Magnet (echoices) platform. And while you are confident of your magnet selection, you must STILL complete your Zone of Choice application as that is your "backup plan." You never have to go BUT it's good to know that if you do not get into any magnet school of your choice, that you will still have a school holding a spot for you through Zone of Choice.
8th Grade Parents

If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Gilbreath at k.gilbreath@lausd.net.
