Child Development & Health/Med Core Classes Team Up for Real-World Learning

Mrs. Taylor’s Child Development students wrapped up their Empathy Belly project this week with a powerful cross-curricular collaboration led by Mrs. Janicke and her Health/Med Core students. After spending a day experiencing the challenge of carrying an additional 20 pounds through the Realityworks Empathy Belly simulation, Child Development students visited a mock prenatal clinic set up by the Health/Med team.

During the lab, students were weighed, measured for height and belly size, practiced using medical stirrups, had their blood pressure taken, and walked through what a typical prenatal checkup would look like for an expecting mother. The hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of both the physical strain of pregnancy and the medical care involved.

Throughout the activity, students demonstrated the Raider Goals:

  • Communicators as they asked medical questions, explained symptoms, and interacted with Health/Med students,

  • Thinkers as they compared their empathy belly experiences with real prenatal procedures, and

  • Contributors as they supported one another during measurements and engaged respectfully in the clinic-style stations.

With this project complete, Mrs. Taylor’s students are now looking ahead to second semester—when they will each receive their simulated “babies” to care for over the course of a week. The prenatal experience has set the stage for a meaningful next chapter in understanding the responsibilities of parenting and child development.

Parenting Class Parenting Class

Mrs. Taylor’s Parenting Class Wraps Up with “Hot Cocoa & Conversation”

Just before heading off for Thanksgiving break, Mrs. Taylor’s Parenting class transformed their classroom into a cozy café—complete with a hot chocolate bar, Danish pastries, and café-style seating—to practice Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then Be Understood.

Students rotated through conversation tables, each featuring thoughtful questions designed to help them get to know their classmates on a deeper level. As they sipped cocoa and chatted, students intentionally practiced listening first, asking follow-up questions, and showing genuine interest before sharing their own perspectives.

The activity tied directly to the Raider Goals of becoming strong Communicators, thoughtful Thinkers, and active Contributors. By the end of the session, students had not only connected with new peers but also strengthened essential relationship-building skills that support both classroom success and healthy family dynamics.

The warm “café day” was the perfect way to close the chapter before the holiday break—combining comfort, communication, and community in true Raider fashion.

Lunchtime Financial Aid Booth Brings Awareness for Seniors

During lunch, our Financial Aid Booth was full of activity as seniors stopped by to get important reminders about completing their FAFSA or CADAA applications. Seniors had the chance to spin the prize wheel for a yummy treat—adding a fun twist to an essential task.

Our dedicated Student Financial Aid Ambassadors worked hard throughout the event, sharing key information, answering questions, and distributing friendly reminders to ensure every senior stays on track with their financial aid application. Their efforts helped create an engaging and supportive environment as we continue encouraging seniors to complete their application by March 2nd.
