Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4-8! Our PTO has some amazing things planned to celebrate our teachers on behalf of all parents!

Another thing that teachers love is words of appreciation. Consider sending your child's teacher a personal email or giving them a shout-out in the district's monthly magazine as a thank you for all they do.

Behind every successful student is a team of dedicated professionals, and on Wednesday, May 6th, we have the opportunity to spotlight a vital member of that team: our School Nurses.

National School Nurse Day is our chance to recognize the incredible healthcare leaders who keep our campuses safe, healthy, and ready to learn. From managing chronic conditions and navigating complex medical emergencies to providing a compassionate "home base" for students in need, our nurses do far more than just hand out bandages- they are the bridge between healthcare and education, and the heartbeat of our schools.

Please take a moment to recognize them on this special day, ensure they feel valued, and celebrate them for the work they do every day in our schools.

It seems like we just had our 3rd 9 weeks awards ceremonies but we are already gearing up for our End of Year awards! Here are the dates and times so you can save the date:

Wednesday, May 20:

9:00 4th grade

10:00 3rd grade

11:00 Kindergarten

12:00 1st grade

1:00 2nd grade

Thursday, May 21:

8:00 5th grade

*5th graders will do a final "5th grade walk" through the hallways at Murchison at 7:45, then begin awards at 8:00.

Hendrickson sponsors a group called The Locker. Their service learning project for this semester is hosting a free soccer clinic. See the flyer below for more information and the information below about the purpose behind The Locker.

Our Mission Statement:

The Locker educates and empowers youth, through Service Learning, to meet the needs of others in their community so that every child has a sense of normalcy.

Our Motto:

"Kids Helping Kids"

What we do:

We stock our pantry with food, snacks, hygiene items and school supplies for students who have a need for it. Maybe it's a necessity or maybe they just forgot. There is a great demand for these items. We do our best to restock once a week but the items are usually gone in one day.

Seven 5th graders will be participating in an online art meet called TEAM (Texas Elementary Art Meet.). These artists have worked for months on their original creative expression, and also had to answer some critical thinking questions that will be judged on May 2nd. Mrs. Almaraz asked students to choose their own theme, and gave them the freedom to pick the materials they wanted to use to create.

Our MES representatives will be competing against several schools in our Region, and will also have an opportunity to advance. Good luck to Amelia, Chloe, Ava, Grace, Iris, Cayson, and Isabelle!

For the Sonic fundraiser, we are also hosting a slushie drinking contest that night for all students interested in participating! It will start right at 4:45 so anyone interested must check in with Maddie Wright onsite by 4:30 to be eligible to compete. Sonic is providing a prize for the winner!

We are excited to bring back in-line skating 101 for our 3rd-5th grade students! This fun and engaging program teaches students the basics of skating, with a strong focus on safety and skill development. The program will run for two weeks and costs $12 each student. Be on the lookout for a permission slip/how to pay coming home with your student on Monday or Tuesday. If you have any questions please contact Coach Harvey.

Please see the attachment for details regarding the MES Talent Show, which is open to 4th-5th graders. Auditions will be taking place on May 4-6 during school hours, and then the talent show itself will take place on Thursday, May 14, during school hours for students, plus in the evening from 6-7pm for family/friends. This TS BLURB, as well as the TS REGISTRATION/PERMISSION FORM should have all the details you need, but if you have other questions after reading, don't hesitate to reach out.

STAAR testing begins next week. On days when your child is taking the STAAR test, you will not be able to eat lunch with them. I have listed the testing dates below as well as changes that will effect 5th grade lunch on April 29.

Lunch Time Changes for April 29:

5th grade will eat lunch from 11:35-12:05 on this day
3rd grade will eat lunch from 12:45-1:15 on these two days. However, since students are testing on these days, please plan not to eat lunch with your 3rd grader on these days.

STAAR Testing Dates:

April 28 -- 5th grade Math
April 29 -- 3rd and 4th grade Math
April 30-May 1 -- STAAR Make-ups

We also will not be able to have volunteers upstairs on STAAR testing days. We can still have visitors and volunteers downstairs, as long as it is not in a grade level that is testing that day. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility.

Favor is running a fundraiser for us through May 31. Any order placed with MES designated earns 15% back, whether it's groceries or deliveries! See the flyer below for more information.

All STAAR tests for students in grades 3-5 are administered online. If your child wants to use a mouse with their Chromebook for the STAAR test, only a wired mouse will work for that particular test. Feel free to send your child with a wired mouse on their testing day if they prefer to have one.
