Dear Diary Day!
π On Tuesday, our students celebrated National Dear Diary Day! πβ¨
Tigers took a step back from the noise, picked out their favorite journals, and put pen to paper to craft incredible personal narratives.
Whether reflecting on a defining milestone, capturing a moment of growth, or preserving a quiet memory, taking time to express ourselves is where true storytelling begins. Every great legend starts with a single blank page! ππ

READ!
1. Build an Active Reading Strategy
Annotate as You Read: Keep a pencil, sticky notes, or a digital highlighter handy. Mark key points, write quick reactions in the margins, and highlight unknown vocabulary words.
Practice the SQ3R Method: Before diving in, Survey the text (headings and images), formulate Questions, Read actively, Recite main takeaways, and Review the material immediately after.
Pause and Summarize: At the end of every chapter or major section, write a one-sentence summary in your own words to check for comprehension.
2. Tailor Strategies to the Text Type
For Textbooks & Non-Fiction: Pay close attention to bolded terms, chapter summaries, sidebars, and graphic organizers. Read the end-of-chapter questions before reading the text to know what key facts to look out for.
For Fiction & Literature: Map out character motivations, recurring themes, symbols, and plot structures. Keep a simple character chart to track relationships in complex novels.
For Articles & Research Papers: Read the abstract, introduction, and conclusion first to grab the thesis before working through the technical body paragraphs.
3. Boost Vocabulary & Retention
Use Context Clues: Try to deduce a word's meaning from the surrounding sentence before looking it up in a dictionary.
Keep a Vocab Journal: Maintain a digital list or index card deck of new words you encounter across different subjects.
Connect Ideas to Real-World Concepts: Relate what you read to historical events, personal experiences, or current news to build stronger memory neural paths.
4. Create an Optimal Reading Environment
Eliminate Digital Distractions: Put your phone on "Do Not Disturb" or leave it in another room while tackling required reading.
Use the Pomodoro Technique: Read uninterrupted for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break to process the information and rest your eyes.
Read Out Loud: When encountering dense academic prose or complex poetry, reading passages aloud helps with auditory processing and focus.

Reading Tips and Facts
π 5 Literacy Tips for High School Students
1. READ SOMETHING EVERY DAY π
Even 10β15 minutes of reading each day can strengthen your vocabulary, comprehension, and focus. Choose something you actually enjoy!
2. DONβT SKIP THE WORDS YOU DONβT KNOW π
When you encounter an unfamiliar word, pause and use the context, a dictionary, or an online resource to figure out what it means.
3. ASK QUESTIONS π€
Good readers are curious readers! Ask yourself: What is the author trying to say? Why is this important? What evidence supports this idea?
4. WRITE IT DOWN βπΎ
Take notes, highlight important information, summarize what you read, and write down your thoughts. Writing helps you remember and understand what you read.
5. EXPLORE DIFFERENT GENRES ππ
Don't limit yourself to one type of book. Try mystery, fantasy, science fiction, biography, historical fiction, romance, nonfiction, graphic novels, and more. Your next favorite book may be in a genre you've never tried!
