Building Literacy at Home
Dear Families,
As the leaves fall and the holidays approach, November is the perfect time to cozy up with a good book and strengthen your child’s reading fluency! Fluency isn’t just about reading quickly — it’s about reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression. Strong fluency builds confidence and improves comprehension.
Happy fall! 🌰 🍂
Here are some fun and simple ways to support fluency at home this month:
🔤 1. Phonemic Awareness Games (No materials needed!)
These are quick, oral word-play activities that can be done in the car, during dinner, or before bed:
-
Sound Substitution: “Say cat. Now change /k/ to /h/. What’s the new word?” (hat!)
-
Sound Deletion: “Say smile. Now say it without /s/.” (mile!)
-
Sound Addition: “Start with at. What word do you get if you add /s/ to the beginning?” (sat!)
-
Rhyming Race: Take turns saying as many rhyming words as you can (real or nonsense!).
🕒 Tip: 5 minutes a day makes a big difference!
Spelling Trick Words
🧠 2. Word Mapping for “Heart Words” (Irregular Words)
Help your child “map” tricky sight words that don’t play by the rules — like said, they, or was.
Try this:
-
Say the word (“said”).
-
Tap and count the sounds you hear: /s/ /e/ /d/.
-
Map it out: Write one sound per box — one box might hold a tricky or “heart” part (the part to memorize).
-
Review often — quick, daily review helps words stick!
🩷 You can draw a small heart over the tricky part to remind your child it’s learned by heart!
Fluency Drills and Repeating
💬 3. Fluency Drills and Repeated Reading
-
Choose a short passage or poem your child enjoys.
-
Have them read it aloud three times — each time focusing on a different goal:
-
Accuracy: Reading the words correctly
-
Phrasing: Reading in meaningful groups of words
-
Expression: Reading with feeling and voice
-
-
You can also time for one minute to track progress — but always praise smoothness and confidence over speed!
📚 Fun idea: Try reading scripts from their favorite movies or holiday poems together!
Word Families and Pattern Practice
🎲 4. Word Family and Pattern Practice
Use word families to build automaticity:
-
Pick a pattern like -ake (make, bake, lake, rake).
-
Write each on index cards and practice flipping through quickly.
-
Challenge your child: “How many words can you make that rhyme with cake in 30 seconds?”
🎯 Goal: Recognize patterns and read chunks of words fluently.
❤️ Remember: Fluency builds with repetition and joy.
Encourage your child to read aloud every day, even for just a few minutes, and celebrate small wins — smoother reading, better phrasing, or more confidence!
