A Message from Mr. Zalar
Dear Prussing Families,
It was a lovely, short week of school! It sounds like we had a great turnout at the PTO fundraiser last night, and Chuck E. Cheese was even able to stop by and visit our students at the end of the day. Take a look below for some great pictures from his visit!
While we are all starting to count down the days until Spring Break, we do not want to overlook some important learning before the end of Quarter 3 on Friday, March 6th.
Students are also really looking forward to our next Buddy Activity next month, which is tied to our Kindness theme. Please make sure your child is here on timeโfor the Buddy Activity and every other dayโso they don't miss out on the fun and learning!
Check Your Student's Grades As we approach the end of the quarter, please make sure you log into the Parent Portal to monitor your child's grades. If you need help creating an account or resetting your password, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher for support. We want to partner with you to ensure every student is succeeding!
Important: Driving Etiquette & Student Safety
On a separate, much more serious note, we need to talk about driving etiquette around our school.
As a working parent myself, I deeply understand the stress of dropping kids off on the way to work and how challenging morning and evening routines can be. However, I have never once felt that my child's arrival at school would be worth risking the safety of other children or my child's teachers.
Neighbors and other parents in our community are joining me in contacting the Alderman's office about very entitled behavior on our neighboring streets and in our staff parking lot. We are seeing parents driving erratically, being rude to other parents and staff members, and generally not living up to the expectations we set for our students.
Please be aware of the following:
I cannot police side streets. I am reliant on the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to support us in reminding families about the dangers of double parking and illegally driving into our staff parking lot.
Expect enforcement. If you choose to drive and park unsafely, you risk the embarrassment of having a CPD officer ticket you in front of your child and their friends.
Consider walking. As the weather gets warmer, we hope to see fewer people choosing to drive. We are a safe neighborhood school, and walking is a great option for many of our families!
If you must drive, please drive and park safely and responsibly. The safety of our community depends on it.
Upcoming Fun: Dances & Movie Nights!
Middle School Dance (Tonight!): We are looking forward to seeing our 6th-8th grade students at the dance tonight! Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip turned in so we know exactly who is walking home at the end of the night and who is being picked up.
PTO Family Movie Night: Mark your calendars! We are looking forward to our PTO-sponsored Family Movie Night next Thursday, March 5th.
Have a wonderful and safe weekend!
Best,
Mr. Zalar Principal, Prussing Elementary

Classroom Ambassadors
We are starting a new program for 3rd grade and up at Prussing called Classroom Ambassadors. We are asking all homeroom teachers to nominate two students from each classroom to act as classroom ambassadors. The core objective of the program is to help acclimate new students to Prussing by helping new students learn classroom routines, room locations and introducing them to other students. More specific tasks include sitting with them at lunch the first few days, helping them with their lockers, and acting as a check-in buddy for the first couple of weeks if they need anything.
Prussing Middle School Career Fair will be held on February 26, 2026 from 8:30-10:30am.
SEL Monthly Theme for February: Kindness
kindness is using your words and actions to show people you care about them. Itโs like a superpower that everyone has! Being kind means being friendly, generous, and thinking about how other people feel. When you are kind, you help make the world a happier place for everyone. How to Be Kind
You don't need a special occasion to be kind. You can practice it every day in small ways:
Using Nice Words: Saying "please," "thank you," and giving honest compliments (like "I like your drawing!").
Helping Out: Holding the door for someone, helping a friend pick up dropped crayons, or cleaning up without being asked.
Including Others: Noticing if someone is playing alone at recess and asking, "Do you want to play with us?"
Listening: Paying attention when a teacher or a friend is talking to show that what they say matters.
The "Ripple Effect"
Kindness is a bit like a boomerang or a ripple in a pond. When you do something nice for someone else, it usually makes you feel good, too! Plus, it often inspires that person to go do something nice for someone else.
The Golden Rule: A great way to remember how to be kind is to "Treat others the way you would want to be treated."
